The present invention relates to hydrophilic softhand agents for fibrous materials which besides customary emulsifiers, known ingredients and water contain a water-soluble ammonium salt with at least one fatty acid radical as component (1), at least one quaternary ammonium compound other than component (1) with at least one long-chain alkyl radical as component (2) and conventionally dispersed polyethylene wax as component (3). The use of these softhand agents for treating fibrous materials, in particular textiles, is also described. The present hydrophilic softhand agents are notable for combining good to very good hydrophilicity and a pleasantly soft, fleecy/full softhand with virtually unimpaired whiteness of the treated materials and extremely good storage and temperature stability.

The present invention is concerned with the flame-proof finishing of textiles, and provide, a flame-proofing composition capable of giving stable emulsions in organic water-insoluble solvents. The composition comprises a salt of (a) guandine or salts thereof with weak acids, dicyandiamide or cyanamide and/or reaction products thereof with formaldehyde, and (b) acid mono and/or diphospheric acid esters of alcohols having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the salt of (a) and (b) having in aqueous solution a pH value of more than 3.6, and (c) 3 to 15% by weight, based on the weight of the solid content of the composition, of compounds having the general formulae: ##EQU1## and/or ##EQU2## x being equal to 2 to 15, R.sup.1 representing a saturated alkyl group having 4 to 18 carbon atoms, and R.sup.2 representing hydrogen or a methyl group. An advantage of the composition is that it can be applied from organic water-insoluble solvents.

Composition for making textiles flame-proof and its application

This invention relates to the production of condensation products which can be used to impart a soft handle to textiles. A monobasic fatty acid with at least 8 carbon atoms and/or montanic acids is reacted with dipropylene triamine and/or diethylene triamine. At least 40 mol % of the acid must be a straight chain fatty acid with at least 12 carbon atoms. The molar ratio of fatty acid to triamine is about 2:1. Thereafter the resulting product is heated with urea in a molar ratio of product to urea of 1:0.5 to 1:1, and optionally the resulting urea condensate is treated with 1 to 5 moles of formaldehyde by mole of urea condensate. The final product can be made into an aqueous emulsion or organic solvent solution and used in the treatment of textiles to give an excellent and soft handle without yellowing of white textiles or changing the shade of coloured textiles.
