A method for calculating a route from a starting location to a destination location is described; it is characterized in that the route is calculated after specifying at least one pass-through destination location by way of at least one pass-through destination point, which is situated in a circumscribed area of the at least one pass-through destination location specified by a specified criterion. In contrast with the route calculation method known from the related art, the specified pass-through destinations are not part of the trip route, but instead, except for a specified circumscribed area, they function as vaguely specified interpolation points for influencing the route calculation.

Route calculation method

A method of route calculation in an vehicle navigation device is described, whereby a route from a starting location or a current location to a destination location is calculated, so that in the case of a deficiency in the vehicle or a deficiency impairing the driver of the vehicle, the route to an alternate destination location which has facilities for eliminating the deficiency is calculated instead of the original destination location. In addition, a method of navigation of a driver of a vehicle from a starting location to at least one destination location is also described, a trip route from the starting location or a current location to the at least one destination location being determined, and driving instructions being generated as a function of a current location so that in the case of a deficiency in the vehicle or a deficiency impairing the driver of the vehicle, the trip route to an alternate destination location which has the facilities for eliminating the deficiency is calculated.

Method of route calculation and method of navigation

A method of transmitting digitally coded traffic information is described, in which a digitally coded traffic message including location information is transmitted is standard format, preferably according to the TMC method. When the location information in the traffic message requires change and/or completion, a header is provided in front of the traffic message, which indicates that additional information including changes or additions to the location information in the traffic message follows the traffic message. A navigation method is set forth for calculating a travel route of a vehicle from a starting or an actual vehicle location to an operator-defined destination and for guiding a vehicle operator during operation of the vehicle over and along the calculated travel route, in which at least one possible parking location at the operator-defined destination is designated and the at least one possible parking location is included in the calculating of the travel route as a location to which the vehicle is guided when the operator conducts the vehicle over the travel route. After input of the operator-defined destination into a navigation unit of the vehicle by the operator, the location to which the vehicle is guided over the travel route is determined by the navigation system advantageously automatically taking account of the available parking locations at the input destination. Either the vehicle operator can select between a number of possible parking locations proposed by the navigation system or the navigation system can automatically select the best parking location using a predetermined selection criterion. Thus the operator does not need to know the exact address of the parking locations near the destination, so that the operator is relieved of input of the address of the parking location to which the vehicle is to be guided by street name or other information in order to determine the calculated travel route.
