There is disclosed a dental handpiece which mounts a dental implement at one end thereof, drive means provided in the handpiece to operate the dental implement, a connection piece pivotally connected to an opposite end of the handpiece so as to permit relative rotation between the handpiece and the connection piece, means provided in the connection piece to enable a handpiece-supply line to be coupled therewith, a light source, and a light guide having a light-receiving end arranged to receive light from the light source and a light-emitting end arranged to direct light to a treatment region adjacent to the dental implement. In order to avoid any impediment to operation of the handpiece caused by the presence of the light guide, the light guide is arranged to extend within the handpiece and the connection piece. Further, the light guide is transversely divided into first and second guide portions in the region of the connection between the handpiece and the connection piece, and the first guide portion extends within the connection piece and terminates in the connection region between the handpiece and the connection piece, and the second guide portion extends from this connection region within the handpiece towards the implement end. To provide for transmission of light between the first and second guide portions, despite relative rotation taking place between the handpiece and the connection piece, a pair of light transmitting rings are provided, one being arranged in the connection piece to co-operate with the first guide portion and the other being arranged in the handpiece to co-operate with the second guide portion.

Dental handpiece

A dental handpiece in which an elongated handle sleeve is transversely divided by formation of an anterior sleeve showing a receptacle for a drivable dental-treatment instrument. A connected grip sleeve is detachable by a rotatable tightening ring. The handle sleeve has a coolant line running at least in the area of the transverse space within the inside of the sleeve outside the longitudinal axis of the handle sleeve, the coolant line is also transversely divided and leads to the area of the dental-treatment instrument. Two front sides of the anterior sleeve and the grip sleeve have both two front sides facing each other. One front side is provided with a projecting connecting piece for the cooling line and the other front side is provided with a connecting socket for an insertable connecting piece. The front side of the grip sleeve is provided with guide pins projecting from it and forming a catch device opposing pin sockets of elastic material and serving as an opposing catch device to accept the guide pins. The connecting pieces of each coolant line are connected with a belt canal from which the cooling line portion of the anterior sleeve leads to the area of the dental-treatment instrument.

Dental-instrument handle

A dental handpiece having a sleeve, an axial drive shaft in the sleeve for driving a dental instrument at one end of the handpiece, a first coolant supply line in the handpiece, a second coolant supply line extending axially towards the dental instrument, and a coolant duct in the wall of the sleeve which intercommunicates the first and second coolant lines. The coolant duct extends rectilinearly and generally radially between an inner end which faces the interior of the sleeve and which communicates with the first coolant line, and an outer end which communicates with and is releasably connected to the second line at a location in the wall of the sleeve and which permits manipulation externally of the handpiece for releasing and connecting the duct and the second line.

A dental handpiece comprising a holding sleeve, a head sleeve inclined to the holding sleeve and adapted to mount a dental instrument, a connecting zone providing an interconnection between the holding sleeve and the head sleeve, a drive shaft housed mainly within the holding sleeve and a driven shaft housed within the head sleeve, and a ball-type planetary transmission housed within the connecting zone and serving to transmit drive between the drive shaft and the driven shaft. The drive shaft is sub-divided into a first shaft portion which is housed in the holding sleeve, and a second shaft portion which is housed within the connecting zone and coupled with the planetary transmission. The second shaft portion extends coaxially with the driven shaft in the head sleeve, and the first and second drive shaft portions are coupled together by a rotary-drive-transmitting coupling.
