In a forging machine which has four radial rams with respective tools together forming a closed bite, each tool overlaps one adjacent tool and is overlapped by the other adjacent tool, and can be adjusted laterally relative to the radial ram axis, in the operating plane of the rams and tools, for setting the bite size.

Forging machine

A gripping head (1) comprises a plurality of vertical, spaced laminae (3) defining a gripping aperture (4) for gripping a sheet (7) to be stretched. The laminae (3) are welded at one edge to flanges of a horizontal cross member. In order to facilitate the welding, and to reduce the stress concentration factor at the weld, fillers (11) are arranged between the laminae at the said edge and the weld is a butt weld (13). After welding, the ends of the fillers (11) at the weld seam (13) are bored out (18) to remove cracks, or gaps (16, 17) between the fillers (11) and the laminae (3).

A tightening device for the gripping jaws of a plate stretcher comprises one push rod for each pair of gripping jaws sliding in guides in the gripping head in the stretching plane, and having hinged thereto two link rods which are also hinged to the gripping jaws, the gripping jaw moving synchronously rearwards for the closing operation and forwards for the opening operation, in two guides disposed in V-formation to each other. The link rods are coupled to the gripping jaws in a disengageable manner to avoid damage to the link rods and tightening device if tearing of the plate takes place during the stretching operation, or on account of any difference in the gripping of the plate by the upper and lower gripping jaw causing generation of very large but different forces on the two link rods. The link rods are in the form of angle levers each having a long and short arm pivotally connected to the hydraulically mobile push rod. Each short arm is pivotally connected to a separate hydraulic cylinder disposed on the push rod, and the long arm is releasably coupled by way of mouth-shaped openings to entrainment cams on the gripping jaws so that they can be uncoupled therefrom by swivelling.

A sheet (4) to be stretched is gripped in gripping heads (1, 2) interconnected by pressure members 3, the gripping heads being moved apart by hydraulic cylinder units. Owing to the different lengths of sheet to be stretched, one of the gripping heads--the counter gripping head (2)--is movable and may be locked to the pressure members (3) in different positions. In order to facilitate better adjustment between the pressure members and the gripping head (2) opposite sides of the pressure members (3) are provided with teeth (12, 13) removably engageable by toothed locking members (14, 15). Engagement is carried out by hydraulic cylinders operating axially-displaceable wedges (16, 17) connected to the locking members (14, 15).

A gripping head (2) of a sheet stretcher has a centering device (4) for centering a sheet (1) to be stretched in the middle of the gripping head (2) before the sheet is gripped and stretched. The centering device comprises two centering arms (5) which move with their edges towards the longitudinal sides of the sheet and are synchronously displaced in opposite directions and at right angles to the axis of stretching. In order to facilitate optimum gripping of the sheet automatically, guide rods (9) having engaging members (10) sliding thereon are provided on the centering arms (5) and extend parallel to the axis of stretching. The ends of the engaging members (10) have stops (14), against which the front end of the sheet (1) bears when fully inserted. A distance-measuring device (18), is provided on the centering arm (5) and has a cable drum (22) and a potentiometer (20) on the same shaft (21). The end of the cable is secured to the engaging member ( 10). In this way the depth of insertion may be measured and controlled by the potentiometer (20).

A tube extrusion press extrudes tubes through the annular space formed when a mandrel projects into the aperture of an extrusion die. In order to prevent oxidation of the extruded product, the outside of the tube passes into a cooling section immediately downstream of the die, and a protective gas is blown into the interior of the tube through the mandrel which is hollow and has an opening in its tip. Both the inside and the outside of the tube may be coated with a liquid emulsion, and the hollow mandrel can have internal channels for the passage of a cooling liquid.

A workpiece manipulator for holding workpieces being forged by a forging press has a tongs holder which moves with a parallel motion. The parallel motion is actuated by a hydraulic cylinder, and in the circuit which feeds this cylinder, there is a second cylinder connected to a pressure reservoir. When the pressure rises in the first cylinder during a forging stroke, the piston of the second cylinder yields to allow the first cylinder to actuate the necessary parallel motion.
