An adjustable turning bar for a material web is provided with an adjustably positionable tube that has a plurality of compressed air discharge openings. A slide tube is disposed within the turning bar tube and is also provided with a plurality of air openings. The slide tube is shiftable axially within the turning bar tube to align selected ones of the slide tube's air openings with the appropriate compressed air discharge openings on the turning bar. Air openings not being used will be closed off.

A paper guide for a web-fed rotary printing press which prints multiple colors on both sides of a paper web uses multiple color printing groups arranged in pairs on a plurality of vertically spaced levels. Separate air drying paths are provided for the web after it has been initially printed in multiple colors on one side and again after it has been printed in multiple colors on its other side. The length of these paths are a multiple of the spacing between plate cylinders in each of the levels of the printing machine.

A chambered doctor blade for a short inking unit of a rotary press includes an ink receiving chamber and a profiled body positioned in the chamber. The shapes of the profiled body and the ink receiving chamber are complementary and define an ink flow path. This path is tapered in the direction of ink flow and provides a forced circulation of the ink through the tapered flow path.

Flexographic printing in a web-fed rotary printing press is accomplished using water-based inks without plugging the screened surfaces of the printing plate. The temperature of the water-based ink is kept within a first temperature range while the temperature of the screened ink roller is kept within a second, higher temperature range.

An inking bar for a flush inking unit in a rotary printing press utilizes a profiled body which is situated in an ink distributing chamber in the inking bar to minimize turbulence in the ink. This profiled body is pivotably or rotatably carried in the ink distributing chamber so that the pressure between its surface and a cooperating surface of the screened surface ink fountain roller can be varied.

A printing plate fastening and tensioning assembly for use with a plate cylinder of a rotary printing machine uses springs and magnets to provide holding forces. The springs bias fastening or tensioning bars away from walls of a groove formed in the peripheral surface of the plate cylinder. Magnetic forces provided by magnetic carried either by the plate cylinder or by these movable bars attract a portion of the bar to the groove wall. This alternative use of spring or magnetic forces effects either a fastening or tensioning of a selected end portion of a printing plate carried by the plate cylinder.

A rotary printing machine has first and second printing couples for accomplishing recto and verso printing of a web. Each printing couple includes an inking unit, a plate cylinder and an impression cylinder. Each of these impression cylinders may selectively be provided with a soft or a hard cover depending on the type of printing plate secured to the plate cylinder and the type of printing ink used.

An offset short inking unit includes a screen surface ink fountain roller that is supplied with ink and that transfers the ink to one or more printing plates. Dampening fluid is also supplied to the printing plates from a dampening unit. One or more dampening fluid separation units are placed in contact with the surface of the screened ink fountain roller and operate to remove any residual dampening fluid from the screen roller before this residual dampening fluid can find its way into the fresh ink supply in the ink fountain.

A short inking unit for an offset rotary printing machine utilizes a heated ink transport cylinder having a particular surface with varying degrees of hydrophilicity, and an array of air blowing nozzles which cooperate to reduce or virtually eliminate contamination of the offset printing ink supply source with dampening fluid. Printing quality is improved since ink viscosity does not change and dampening fluid useage is kept at a minimum.

A web-fed offset rotary printing machine is disclosed. First and second satellite printing units are utilized to perform multiple color recto and verso printing. The cylinder diameters and bearer ring diameters of the first satellite unit are capable of being varied with respect to those of the second unit to accurately control paper web tension and hence to accomplish a color registry which is highly accurate. Calibrated underlay sheets are used to adjust the cylinder diameters and thin, hard, flexible bands are secured on the outer peripheries of inner rings to vary the bearer ring diameters.

A paper web guiding mechanism for printing units in a rotary web-fed printing machine is disclosed. Each printing unit has associated therewith a pivotable paper web guide frame which is comprised generally of spaced side plates. Each side plate is rotatably secured at its lower end to a longitudinal support member of the printing unit so that the paper guide frame can be pivoted between inclined and vertical positions. Paper guide rollers are held between the spaced side plates at the upper and lower ends of the paper guide frame to define a path of paper web travel. A cover sheet extends between the side plates from their upper ends downwardly to a point above the lower ends. This cover sheet supports the body of a press operator who is thus afforded access to various components of the printing units without necessitating severing of the paper web. An operating floor pedestal is placed between the lower ends of the side plates and the press operator can stand on this pedestal.

An apparatus for shifting the paper web feed through a web-fed rotary printing press is disclosed. The paper web passing through the printing press contacts one or more fixed guide rollers and a shiftable guide roller carried at a free end of a pair of movable shifting bars. These shifting bars can be rotated about their fixed ends to shift the position of the shiftable guide roller and hence the paper web thus allowing access to portions of the printing press. A support platform is carried by the web shifting apparatus to provide a standing area for an operator or workman when the paper web is shifted out of its normal position.
