A disk memory drive includes a brushless drive outer rotor motor having an internal space and a stator with windings. The outer rotor coaxially encircles the stator and a substantially cylindrical air gap is defined between the stator and the rotor. The rotor includes permanent magnets and a hub fixedly connected with the magnet. A disk mounting section is provided on the hub for accommodating at least one storage disk positioned in a clear space, the mounting section being adapted to extend through a central aperture of the storage disk. The windings and the magnets interacting with the windings are disposed for at least half of the axial longitudinal dimension thereof within a space surrounded by the disk mounting section of the hub. Bearings rotatably mount the rotor and the hub.

A compact disk storage device having outer-rotor electric motor for directly driving a disk for recording and reproducing information has an axially deep, tank-form flange and a stationary shaft, upon which the mounting annulus of the flange and the ball bearings of the hub are axially displaced. The hub includes a cover disk for sealing an extremity of the ball bearings and an inverted cup shape rotor providing magnetic shielding. The flange includes a mounting rim substantially aligned with the back surface of the cup-shape rotor. The facing cup-like and tank-form shapes readily enable labyrinth seals and substantial and abutting axial extents along the axis of the stationary shaft.

A compact outer-rotor electric motor that can be used for directly driving a disk for recording and reproducing information has an axially deep, tank-form flange and a stationary shaft, upon which the mounting annulus of the flange and the ball bearings of the hub are axially displaced. In order to reduce the cost of producing an in-hub motor, which consists of a hub and the motor which is located in this hub and which contains magnets, magnetic yokes, coils, and shieldings, the hub (2) made of magnetizable steel is coated at least on the outer surface (20) with a noncorrosive coating which is reduced by means of final machining in the completed state of the motor.

The present invention relates to an integrated driving system for signal-processing devices, especially video devices (recorders), disk drives, and other, preferably magnetic pulse recording devices, wherein the device chassis (1) and the mounting provision for at least two motors (20, 21, 22) are formed integrally with each other. The device chassis (1) proper also includes all mounting or bearing bores (e.g. 2, 50, 55) for all mounting shafts (e.g. 4, 8, 18) in a precise positional relation to each other. The bores (2, 50, 55) for all mounting shafts (4, 8, 18) and axles are formed in the metal-cast device chassis (1) in one or more machining operations without the necessity of re-chucking, ensuring that not only the active and passive driving sections of the driving system, but also the reference surfaces and bearing or supporting points are precisely positioned relative to each other.

A compact motor mount for cassette drive systems includes a base plate in the form of a laminate that includes at least one planar layer of ferromagnetic material sandwiched between two printed circuit boards. A capstan motor is supported by the base plate. The stator coil assembly of the capstan motor is mounted on one side of the base plate directly on one of the two printed circuit boards. At least one winding drive motor also is supported in common with the capstan motor by the base plate. The stator coil assembly of the drive motor is mounted on the other side of the base plate directly on the second of the two printed circuit boards. Each of the motors has a permanent magnet rotor mounted on a shaft and facing the respective stator coil assemblies across an air gap defined therebetween.

A seal includes a magnetic circuit having a permanent magnet providing excitation. A rotatable shaft has a straight cylindrical outer surface and is supported in a ball bearing system. A magnetically conductive bearing ring is mounted on the shaft immediately adjacent one end of the bearing system. The bearing ring has two radial portions of different thicknesses, the outer portion being thinner than the inner portion adjacent the shaft. A permanent magnet ring is located adjacent the bearing ring on the side opposite the bearing system. A labyrinth gap is defined between the bearing system and the permanent magnet ring on both sides of the bearing ring radially extending therebetween, and a ring pole is located axially adjacent the permanent magnet ring on the opposite side of the bearing system. An active pole gap is defined between the inner diameter of the ring pole and the shaft and is filled with a magnetically conductive fluid, the gap being essentially in series with the labyrinth gap.

A composite printed circuit board having a metallic layer supporting body with a first insulating layer thereon and wherein the insulating layer has copper printed circuits placed thereon. The printed circuit board is adapted to precisely hold and position electric components (normally electrical motor sensors) on stamped out recesses in the composite body. The stamped out recesses have edge portions for finitely positioning the components and allow for electric leads coming from the components to pass over the bent tabular portion of the recess to be soldered to the copper circuits.

A timing signal has a value changing during its period and a frequency dependent on actual motor rpm. A reference signal has an average value indicating desired rpm and a superimposed sawtooth component used, after desired rpm is reached, to generate phase-error information. A comparator receives the two signals and produces an output pulse which begins when the timing signal reaches the value of the reference signal, and which ends at the end of the period of the timing signal. In the case of rpm error, the comparator output pulse duration serves to regulate rpm; in the steady state, it serves to regulate phase. A sample-and-hold capacitor converts the aforementioned pulse duration into a lengthier motor-control signal. In the case of rpm error, the pulse duration inaccurately indicates the amount of rpm error, the inaccuracy corresponding to the difference between the average and instantaneous values of the reference signal. During motor start-up, the amplitude of the sawtooth component of the reference signal is attenuated, to thereby reduce the difference between such average and instantaneous values and thus increase the accuracy of indication of the rpm error. The falling sawtooth flank is substantially more than half the period of the sawtooth, so that phase error can be indicated within a correspondingly large range of values.
