A thickness-direction phase retardation value of the negative C-plate is equal to or less than a value acquired by subtracting about 75 nanometers from a thickness-direction phase retardation value of the liquid crystal layer and the thickness-direction phase retardation value of the negative C-plate is equal to or greater than a value acquired by subtracting about 275 nanometers from the thickness-direction phase retardation value of the liquid crystal layer.

In a display apparatus, pixels are arranged in a matrix defined by gate lines and data lines, and each pixel includes a first sub pixel charged to a first pixel voltage and a second sub pixel charged to a second pixel voltage having a same voltage level as the first pixel voltage. A voltage controller controls a voltage level of the first and second pixel voltages charged in the pixels corresponding to the first through penultimate pixel rows in response to a next gate signal. A dummy voltage controller controls a voltage level of the first and second pixel voltages charged in the pixels corresponding to the last pixel row in response to a dummy gate signal. Where a dummy voltage controller is not included, a black matrix partially covers the efficient display area of the pixels corresponding to the last pixel row.

A flat panel display device is provided with an increased viewing angle having good dark versus light imaging contrast. The display device includes a display panel, a first optical unit, and a second optical unit. The display panel includes a liquid crystal layer that is driven in a vertical alignment mode. The first optical unit includes a negative C-plate and a first polarizer having a first absorption axis. The second optical unit includes a biaxial compensation plate having a refractive indices coefficient, (nx&#x2212;nz)/(nx&#x2212;ny) of more than 0.45 and less than 0.55, and a second polarizer having a second absorption axis crossing the first absorption axis. The biaxial compensation plate has a refractive indices relationship of nx&#x3e;nz&#x3e;ny such that dispersion of polarization states of colored light rays passed through the C-plate and the liquid crystal layer may be minimized and gathered about an extinction point, thereby improving contrast at side viewing angles.

A display substrate includes a base substrate, a gate line, a first insulation layer, a semiconductor layer, a data line, a switching element, a light-blocking member, a reflective electrode, a second insulation layer and a transmissive electrode. The switching element is defined by a gate electrode, a source electrode and a drain electrode spaced apart from a source electrode. The light-blocking member includes a first light-blocking part disposed in correspondence with an area where the gate line and the data line are disposed, and a second light-blocking part is disposed in a reflective area to include an embossing pattern. The reflective electrode is disposed on the second light-blocking part. The second insulation layer is disposed in a pixel area of the reflective electrode.
