A video recording apparatus to record a television program with an optimal quality according to a residual quantity of a recording medium and a method therefor. The video recording apparatus detects the residual quantity of the recording medium and a running time of the television program to be recorded on the recording medium, to determine an optimal image compression ratio. Then, the video recording apparatus records the television program based on the determined optimal image compression ratio, making the best use of the residual quantity of the recording medium.

A motor installed on a wall of a cassette housing operates a placement gear and a rotating member for safely placing a cassette holder on a deck and then also operates a ring gear, which is installed on the deck, in order to load video tape for reproduction, thereby making it possible that both the action of placing the cassette holder on the deck and the action of loading the tape for reproduction can be achieved by using only one motor. A combination of a sector gear and a cam or a disc with a built-in spring can also be used in order to lock the cassette holder properly after the cassette holder, with the cassette held therein, is placed on the deck.

An optical disk recording device providing disks adapted for direct access reproduction and a direct access reproducing method thereof. A recording location of a disk at a user-selected direct access unit time or a user-selected time point is stored as a reproduction starting address. A direct access table is generated in which reproduction starting addresses are cross-referenced with recording locations of the choice menus. The direct address table is recorded in a specific area of the disk. During reproduction, the direct access table is read and the choice menus are read from the disk according to the recording locations of the choice menus included in the direct access table. A direct access menu picture is generated and displayed. Data at a recording location of the disk corresponding to the reproduction starting address of a user-selected choice menu is reproduced in response to a user's selection.

Optical disk recording device for producing disks adapted for direct access reproduction and a direct access reproducing method thereof

A directly accessing apparatus and method of a disk recording and reproducing system, in which scene changes are detected and the very next specific images in the start portions of continuous images after the scene changes are captured, decimated and stored in a temporary storage unit, and the output of the temporary storage unit is edited and recorded on a specific recording area of a disk after a corresponding moving image is entirely recorded on the disk. Accordingly, corresponding moving images can be visually indexed so as to be directly accessed.

Direct accessing apparatus and method of disk recording and reproducing system

A variable capacitor and a memory device employing the same. The variable capacitor includes a first electrode formed above a substrate; a second electrode suspended with respect to the first electrode to be moved back and forth with respect to the first electrode; and an actuator for varying a capacitance. One end of the actuator is connected to the second electrode and mounted with respect to the substrate to move the second electrode with respect to the first electrode in accordance with a voltage signal input through a driving electrode exposed externally. The memory device includes a transistor having a source, a gate, and a drain formed above a substrate, which are spaced apart from each other, a capacitor connected to the source, and an actuator varying a capacitance of the capacitor. With the variable capacitor and the memory device employing the same, the variable capacitor allows the correction of a capacitance error caused during the manufacturing process by varying the capacitance of the capacitor through the electrical driving voltage and provides compatibility in use to be fit to the specification of an electronic unit to which the capacitor is to be applied. The memory device can store multiple values more extensive than binary values in one memory cell, to increase the data storage density thereof.
