A nanoparticle and a method for fabricating the nanoparticle utilize a decomposable material yoke located within permeable organic polymer material shell and separated from the permeable organic polymer material shell by a void space. When the decomposable material yoke comprises a sulfur material and the permeable organic polymer material shell comprises a material permeable to both a sulfur material vapor and a lithium ion within a battery electrolyte the nanoparticle may be used within an electrode for a Li/S battery absent the negative effects of battery electrode materials expansion.

Yolk-shell nanoparticle, method and applications

Provided are poly(arylamine)s. The polymers can be redox active. The polymers can be used as electrode materials in, for example, electrochemical energy storage systems. The polymers can be made by electropolymerization on a conducting substrate (e.g., a current collector).

Poly(arylamine)s and uses thereof

Electropolymerized polymer or copolymer films on a conducting substrate (e.g., graphene) and methods of making such films. The films may be part of multilayer structures. The films can be formed by anodic or cathodic electropolymerization of monomers. The films and structures (e.g., multilayer structures) can be used in devices such as, for example, electrochromic devices, electrical-energy storage devices, photo-voltaic devices, field-effect transistor devices, electrical devices, electronic devices, energy-generation devices, and microfluidic devices.

Electropolymerization onto flexible substrates for electronic applications

A solar flow battery comprising: a positive compartment containing at least one positive electrode in contact with a positive electrolyte containing a first redox active molecule; a negative compartment containing at least one negative electrode in contact with a negative electrolyte containing a second redox active molecule, wherein said first and second redox active molecules remain dissolved in solution when changed in oxidation state; at least one of said negative or positive electrodes comprises a semiconductor light absorber; electrical communication means between said electrodes and an external load for directing electrical energy into or out of said solar flow battery; a separator component that separates the positive and negative electrolytes while permitting the passage of non-redox-active species; and means for establishing flow of the positive and negative electrolyte solutions past respective electrodes. Methods of using the solar flow battery for storing and releasing electrical energy are also described.

A redox flow battery comprising: a positive compartment containing a positive electrode in contact with a liquid electrolyte comprised of an organic redox active molecule dissolved in a solvent; a negative compartment containing a negative electrode in contact with a liquid electrolyte comprised of said organic redox active molecule dissolved in a solvent; electrical communication means for establishing electrical communication between said positive electrode, said negative electrode and an external load for directing electrical energy into or out of said symmetric redox flow battery; a separator component that separates the electrolyte solutions in the positive and negative compartments while permitting the passage of non-redox-active species between electrolyte solutions in positive and negative compartments; and means capable of establishing flow of the electrolyte solutions past said positive and negative electrodes, respectively. Methods of using the above-described redox flow battery for storing and releasing electrical energy are also described.

Symmetric redox flow battery containing organic redox active molecule

The invention teaches electrospun light-emitting fibers made from ionic transition metal complexes ('iTMCs') such as [Ru(bpy)](PF.)]/PEO mixtures with dimensions in the 10.0 nm to 5.0 micron range and capable of highly localized light emission at low operating voltages such as 3-4 V with turn-on voltages approaching the band-gap limit of the organic semiconductor that may be used as point source light emitters on a chip.

Electrospun light-emitting fibers

A cascaded light emitting device. The cascaded light emitting device includes: a base electrode formed of a base electrode material and electrically coupled to a base voltage lead; a top electrode layer formed of a top electrode material and electrically coupled to a top voltage lead; a number of electroluminescent layers arranged between and electrically coupled to the base electrode and top electrode layer; and at least one middle electrode layer formed of a middle electrode material. Each of the middle electrodes is coupled between two juxtaposed electroluminescent layers. The electroluminescent layers include a mixed conductor that luminesces with a peak wavelength.

Cascaded light emitting devices based on mixed conductor electroluminescence

The invention is directed to intermetallic compounds for use as catalysts for chemical reactions and catalytic systems. The structure of ordered intermetallic compounds enables such compounds to function as highly efficient catalysts. The ordered intermetallic compounds may be used to catalyze reactions in fuel cells (e.g., hydrogen fuel cells), amongst numerous other applications.

Intermetallic compounds for use as catalysts and catalytic systems

A planar microfluidic membraneless flow cell. The design eliminates the need for a mechanical membrane, such as a polyelectrolyte membrane (PEM) in a fuel cell, by providing a flow channel in which laminar flow regimes exist in two fluids flowing in mutual contact to form a 'virtual interface' in the flow channel. In the flow cell, diffusion at the interface is the only mode of mass transport between the two fluids. In a fuel cell embodiment, a planar design provides to large contact areas between the two streams, which are fuel and oxidant streams, and between each stream and a respective electrode. In some embodiments, silicon microchannels, of fixed length and variable width and height, have been used to generate power using formic acid as fuel and oxygen as oxidant. Power densities on the order of 180 &#x3bc;W/cmhave been obtained using this planar design.

Planar membraneless microchannel fuel cell

An ordered film is formed on a surface by reacting (a) dendrimer or bridging ligand functionalized for reaction with transition metal ions (e.g., terpyridyl-pendant poly-amido amine starburst dendrimers or 1,4-bis&lsqb;4,4&Prime;-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-2,2&prime;:6&prime;2&Prime; terpyridine-4&prime;-yl&rsqb;benzene), dissolved in water immiscible solvent, with (b) transition metal ions dissolved in water, on said surface. This method allows formation of films useful, for example, as electron transfer mediators, other electronic devices, catalysts, sensors, and electrochromic devices.

Ordered arrays via metal-initiated self-assembly of ligand containing dendrimers and bridging ligands

Microelectrodes and methods for making the same are disclosed which have electrode tip diameter of less than 10 .mu.m. The microelectrodes include a tapered electrode wire sealed in, and surrounded by, a tapered insulator tube. In one preferred embodiment, an annealed platinum wire approximately 75 .mu.m in diameter is inserted in an insulator tube, such as a borosilicate pipette, having an inner diameter of approximatley 600 .mu.m. The pipette is heated to the softening temperature of borosilicate and drawn using a conventional pulling technique. As the inner diameter of the pipette draws down, it engages the annealed platinum wire and causes the wire to also draw down in diameter. Careful selection of the relative diameters of the pipette and the platinum wire ensure that the two will break at essentially the same time thereby forming a microelectrode having a platinum disk electrode of less than 10 .mu.m diameter. Other metals, including gold, copper, silver, rhodium, iridium, tungsten and molybdenum can be used for the electrode wire.
