A luminaire includes at least one light source, at least one reflector having a reflector cavity and an optical element positioned to receive light reflected from the at least one reflector cavity. The luminaire does not include a mask or other structure located within the opening of the luminaire that would partially occlude light exiting the luminaire&#x2014;light can thus exit the luminaire unimpeded. In some embodiments, the at least one reflector cavity is semi toroidal. Moreover, in some embodiments, the optical element includes a reflective optical element, a refractive optical element or a combination thereof. Methods of lighting a surface are also described.
