An airbag has an inflatable airbag cushion having panels of material joined to create the inflatable airbag cushion including a neck portion for receiving inflation gas at an inflation inlet and a generally opposed front face portion. An externally attached guide panel of material is externally affixed to the airbag cushion at a first end at least halfway toward the opposed front face portion relative to the neck portion or affixed at the front face portion and a second end is connected at the neck portion of the airbag cushion or in close proximity to the airbag cushion near the inflation inlet. The externally attached guide panel is only attached at the first and second ends and upon inflation of the airbag cushion the externally attached guide panel tightens between the first and second ends directing the airbag deployment towards a seat-belted occupant.

External tether airbag

An air bag having a tri-state vent, in an initial state the vent is configured to be closed, the vent in a medial state configured to be at least partially open or fully open as the air bag is starting to inflate permitting some inflator gas to exit through the vent and the vent in a final state configured to be at least partially closed or fully closed as the air bag continues to inflate.

Airbag with multi-state vent

An airbag module () has a housing (), an airbag (), an inflator () and a deflector mechanism () which provides a barrier or guide and a reaction hoodor surface to modify the trajectory of the airbag on inflation to inflate at a lower trajectory. The deflector mechanism () has a tensioning member ().

Airbag module with external deflector

An airbag cushion () with a recessed portion formed on an exterior of the airbag cushion has a pair of side panels () and a tether () for limiting outward movement of the inflated airbag cushion; and wherein the tether () forms a portion of the exterior surface of the airbag cushion ().

Airbag cushion

An airbag cushion of flexible sheet material has a vent opening with a vent cover of flexible sheet material stitched to an interior surface of the airbag cushion aligned with the vent opening in the airbag cushion to form a pocket. The vent cover has a vent opening therein allowing inflation gas to escape from the cushion via the vent opening. A vent flap of flexible sheet material is disposed at least partially within the pocket and inboard of the vent openings in the airbag cushion and vent cover. A tether extends inboard from vent flap to a tether end that is fixed in a releasable manner to a tether end securing device fixed to a module housing. The tether end is released in response to a sensor signal.
