A method for correcting for aging in particulate matter sensors for a diesel engine includes calculating calculated particulate matter values for a modeled diesel engine exhaust system over a period of time, measuring measured test particulate matter values with a test particulate matter sensor over the period of time in a test diesel engine exhaust system, determining differences between the calculated particulate matter values and the measured test particulate matter values from the test particulate matter sensor over the period of time, and correcting measured particulate matter values in at least one other particulate matter sensor over a same period of time based on the determined differences to obtain a corrected particulate matter value. A particulate matter sensor arrangement and a vehicle including a particulate matter sensor arrangement are also provided.

Method and arrangement for correcting for error of particulate matter sensors

An exhaust emissions monitoring device includes a pipe adapted to mount to the tailpipe of a vehicle and includes a cable for connecting to the vehicle engine control unit (ECU) and power system. The pipe defines an internal flow passage to allow exhaust to flow through. A plurality of sensors is mounted on the pipe and each sensor extends through an access port formed on the pipe wall to be exposed to the internal flow passage. Exhaust properties and constituents are sensed by multiple sensors for each constituent, there are two or more sensors for each of NOx, temperature, ammonia, particulate matter. The sensors communicate data signals to a processor/data logger also mounted on the pipe.

Engine exhaust emissions monitoring device

A method is provided of operating a diesel engine having an exhaust aftertreatment system (EATS) including one or more apparatus for controlling exhaust NOX levels, the engine including a plurality of systems and components, at least some of which systems and components are adapted to be set to one or more control setpoints for one or more base actuators of the engine. The method includes establishing a plurality of engine operating modes, each operating mode differing from any other operating mode with respect to at least one control setpoint, for each operating mode, mapping fuel economy versus NOX levels exiting the EATS, selecting an operating mode from among the plurality of operating modes so that exhaust exiting the EATS contains NOX at no more than a predetermined NOX level and a least amount of fuel is consumed per unit energy; and operating the engine in the selected operating mode. An engine arrangement is also provided.

Method of operating a diesel engine and diesel engine arrangement having plural operating modes

Methods and systems for controlling reductant levels in an SCR catalyst are provided. In one aspect, reductant levels are adjusted in response to a ratio of change of NOx conversion efficiency to a change of reductant level. In another aspect, reductant injection levels are periodically adjusted to see if NOx conversion efficiency is better or worse at the adjusted levels.
