A new class of multi-component rare earth multi-silicate materials has been created for use in harsh environments such as gas turbine engines. Moreover, by combining two-or-more rare earth disilicates the properties (for example, thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, etc.) can be tailored to fit specific applications, such as having a matching thermal expansion with that of silicon-based composites and a low thermal conductivity close to that of 1 W/m K. Applications can be extended for use with other material classes such as MCrAlY, MAX-phase, and refractory metal alloys, utilizing a thermal expansion of up to about 15×10/° C. By mixing of specific sets of rare earth disilicates it is possible to obtain a high entropy or entropy stabilized mixture, and utilize features such as 'sluggish diffusion', and more.

Functional barrier coating and related methods thereof

A lattice structure includes multiple identical unit cells formed from joined plates. In the lattice structure, some of the plates are rectangular plates, some of the plates are triangular plates, and some of the plates are trapezoidal plates. Further, any two of the joined rectangular plates have corresponding surface normals perpendicular to each other and at least two edges of each one of the triangular plates are joined to one of a surface or an edge of one of the plurality of joined plates. Further, at least three edges of each one of the trapezoidal plates are joined to one of a surface or an edge of one of the plurality of joined plates, and any one of a plurality of surface normals for the triangular plates and the trapezoidal plates are nonparallel to any one of a plurality of surface normals of rectangular plates.

Impulse mitigation systems for media impacts and related methods thereof

A directed vapor deposition (DVD) method and system for applying at least one bond coating on at least one substrate for thermal barrier coating systems. To overcome the limitations incurred by conventional methods, the DVD system uses an electron beam directed vapor deposition (DVD) technique to evaporate and deposit compositionally and morphologically controlled bond coats at high rate. The present DVD system uses the combination of an electron beam and a combined inert gas/reactive gas carrier jet of controlled composition to create engineering films. In this system, the vaporized material can be entrained in the carrier gas jet and deposited onto the substrate at a high rate and with high materials utilization efficiency. The velocity and flux of the gas atoms entering the chamber, the nozzle parameters, and the operating chamber pressure can all be significantly varied, facilitating wide processing condition variation and allowing for improved control over the properties of the deposited layer.

Method and apparatus for application of metallic alloy coatings

A method for manufacturing a ballistic resistance package which includes providing a molecularly oriented tape material having a front face and back face with a minimum of two sets of parallel side faces; wrapping molecularly oriented fabric material around the front and back faces and a set of the parallel side faces of the molecularly oriented tape material, yielding a wrapped core structure; and finalizing the wrapped core structure to yield the ballistic resistance package. A multifunction ballistic resistance system for resisting projectiles and/or mitigating blast effects of explosions. The multifunction ballistic resistance system may include: at least one cellular frame defining cells therein, and a plurality of molecularly oriented tape material core structures wrapped in molecularly oriented fabric material and finalized, and attached to at least one cellular frame.

Lightweight ballistic resistant anti-intrusion systems and related methods thereof

A system and related method that provides, but is not limited thereto, a thin structure with unique combination of thermal management and stress supporting properties. An advantage associated with the system and method includes, but is not limited thereto, the concept providing a multifunctional design that it is able to spread, store, and dissipate intense thermal fluxes while also being able to carry very high structural loads. An aspect associated with an approach may include, but is not limited thereto, a large area system for isothermalizing a localized heating source that has many applications. For example it can be used to mitigate the thermal buckling of ship deck plates, landing pad structures, or any other structures subjected to localized heating and compressive forces. It can also be used as a thermal regulation system in numerous applications, including but not limited to under-floor heating for residential or commercial buildings or for the de-icing of roads, runways, tunnels, sidewalks, and bridge surfaces.

Multifunctional thermal management system and related method

Light-weight, heat-managing structures feature open-cell lattice, honeycomb, and/or corrugated (prismatic) arrangements in their substructures, combined with heat pipe/heat plate arrangements for managing heat to which the structures are subjected. The structures are well suited to aerospace applications and may be employed in the leading edge of wings or other airfoil-shaped components; gas turbine engine components; rocket nozzles; and other high-heat, high-stress environments.

Heat-managing composite structures

Structures based upon periodic cellular materials that provide a potential for defeating combinations of both air blast loading and ballistic attack either sequentially or simultaneously, or combination of both. The cellular structures may also be configured to meet the stiffness and strength support requirements of particular vehicle or other applications, systems or structures. The armor is therefore potentially able to support normal service loads and defeat blast and ballistic threats when necessary. The structure provides for using efficient load support capabilities of the material (without a high armor protection level) in low threat conditions, as well as the ability to modify the system to increase its level protection to a desired or required level. This would reduce the weight of the protection system in normal (low threat) conditions which reduces vehicle wear and tear, as well as cost savings in fabrication of applicable structures or systems.

Hybrid periodic cellular material structures, systems, and methods for blast and ballistic protection

A method for producing three-dimensional space frames or truss structures from simpler components and space frames or truss structures produced by the associated method. The various components, which may be made from virtually any material, are shaped in such a way so that they may be fitted together to create a space frame or truss structure. The components may be held together by any available attachment means, or by the interaction of the components themselves. The method and associated components allows for the assembly of three-dimensional space frames or truss structures from planar materials, significantly reducing cost and manufacturing time. These space frames or trusses can then be used as structural members, as the interior load-bearing portions of sandwich panels, or in any situation where high-strength and light weight are desirable.

Three-dimensional space frames assembled from component pieces and methods for making the same

A plasma generation process that is more optimized for vapor deposition processes in general, and particularly for directed vapor deposition processing. The features of such an approach enables a robust and reliable coaxial plasma capability in which the plasma jet is coaxial with the vapor plume, rather than the orthogonal configuration creating the previous disadvantages. In this way, the previous deformation of the vapor gas jet by the work gas stream of the hollow cathode pipe can be avoided and the carrier gas consumption needed for shaping the vapor plume can be significantly decreased.

Coaxial hollow cathode plasma assisted directed vapor deposition and related method thereof

The present invention relates to methods for forming one or more thin film layers on a substrate, to form a multilayer product such as a lithium battery cell. The method involves passing a gas stream comprising at least one doping agent and at least one entrained source material through a plasma; impinging the gas stream on a substrate; and reactively depositing the at least one doping agent, and the at least one entrained source material on the substrate. The present invention provides a method of fabricating a power cell having a plurality of layers, and a method of fabricating a battery by electrically connecting a current collecting layer of a first power cell to a current collecting layer of a second power cell.

Thin film battery synthesis by directed vapor deposition

Methods and systems to manufacture bonded corrugation truss-based structures. This allows the ability to change the dimensions of the individual structural features of the corrugations, i.e. thickness of the core, face sheet thickness, relative density of the core, and the alloys. The nodal design which provides ideal stress/strain distribution for in-plane and out-off plane loading. The node has a curved/smooth triple point intersection which in turn can provide best load transfer interface with high integrity/toughness. The bonded corrugation truss based structure can be continuous to any length only limited by the volume of the extrusion billet and the press capacity. An aspect of the bonded corrugation structures may include friction stir welding of the face sheets or any fusion welding of panels with edge members for strengthening allows fabrication of panels of any width and length. Bonding panels enables the fabrication of structures of any width.

Manufacture of lattice truss structures from monolithic materials

Methods and apparatuses for passive jet blast deflection or the like. Use of the passive jet blast deflector permits the efficient dispersal of a fast moving local heat source into the environment through passive means while providing a high strength structure. The jet blast deflector system may include a first plate, a second plate, and a cellular core disposed between them adapted to allow cooling ambient air to flow through the cellular core, wherein the first plate, second plate, and core are all seamlessly coupled heat pipes that form a single vapor core to facilitate the spreading and even storing of thermal energy. An ejector plate may be attached to the top of the second plate to create a low pressure zone as the heat source passes over it, thereby pulling the ambient air through the cellular core, facilitating the removal the thermal energy from the system.

Method and apparatus for jet blast deflection

A cellular material that can provide a unique combination of properties and characteristics for a variety of applications requiring a cellular solid that possesses one or more of the following characteristics: (1) efficient load support in one or more directions, (2) excellent mechanical impact energy absorption and vibration suppression potential, (3) high convection heat transfer throughout, (4) low pumping requirements for fluid throughput, for example in a second direction orthogonal to one or more load-bearing directions, (5) a substantially linear dependence of the Young's and shear moduli along with the tensile, compressive and shear yield strengths upon relative density (6) a potentially inexpensive textile-based synthetic approach, (7) excellent filtration potential, (8) a high surface area to volume ratio for enhanced activity as a catalyst or catalyst support (9) interconnected, open porosity for device storage, biological tissue in-growth or other functionalities requiring open space, and (10) extendibility to a wide variety of materials.

Multifunctional periodic cellular solids and the method of making thereof

Methods and systems to manufacture lattice-based sandwich structures from monolithic material. Such methods and systems eliminate the bonding process which is conventionally used to join lattice based truss cores to facesheets to form sandwich structures. This bonded interface is a key mode of failure for sandwich structures which are subjected to shear or bending loads because the nodes transfer forces from the face sheets to the core members while the topology for a given core relative density dictates the load carrying capacity (assuming adequate node-bond strength exists). An aspect comprises a core and related structures that provide very low density, good crush resistance and high in-plane shear resistance. An aspect of the truss structures may include sandwich panel cores and lattice truss topology that may be designed to efficiently support panel bending loads while maintaining an open topology that facilitates multifunctional applications.
