Barrier Construction

A post assembly for absorbing impact from a vehicle including a footing, an upright post and a hinge region to allow the post to plastically deform relative to the footing. The post is preferably fixed to a lever arm that is connected to the footing via the hinge region, the lever arm and post pivoting away from the footing under load, The lever arm, footing and hinge region are preferably formed from a common base plate. The invention also relates to barrier system that includes multiple post assemblies, and a barrier supported between respective posts of the assemblies.

Post assembly

A roadway, guard rail or safety barrier having a post and beam construction wherein the beam is mounted to the post by means of a carriage, the beam being secured to the carriage by a securement means, the carriage being adapted to travel longitudinally relative to the post in the event of a collision, the post further including at least one carriage support means, and one or more engagement means on an outer face of the post, the engagement means being adapted to be engaged by the securement means to provide resistance to movement of the carriage with respect to the post, wherein the carriage is sized and shaped so as to not engage or to minimize engagement with the engagement means during the movement.

A barrier system including a guardrail, a support to hold the guardrail in position and a fastener to attach the guardrail to the support, wherein the support has a weakened zone to facilitate the fastener releasing from the support when the support is subject to impact forces.

The present invention provides a roadway barrier or guard rail system which has a post () which passes through the carriage () with the carriage () being free to move up along the post (). The carriage () is prevented from moving down the post () by means of a stop or restraint () which is separate from and underneath the carriage () and which the carriage () abuts, with the stop or restraint () being located on the post (). The carriage () is not otherwise restrained from moving up the post except by the curved channels through the carriage () which engage the extremities of the post, and the friction this may produce. Further systems are provided with the same features but additionally additional frictional or other forces such as shearing forces, produced by means of formations or fixtures to the post or the carriage which must be overcome after the carriage starts moving relative to the post, such as restraints or stops on the post above the carriage. In other embodiments additional frictional or shear forces must be overcome before movement between the carriage () and the post () will occur. The movement of the carriage () on the post () is guided by formations on the carriage () cooperating with the mating formations on the post ().
