A focus adjusting device which includes an edge detection unit that detects edges of a subject image for each color component forming an image including the subject image; a distribution detection unit that detects distributions of a focalized state and an unfocused state of the image based on the edges detected by the edge detection unit; and a control unit that moves a lens based on the distributions detected by the distribution detection unit, wherein the subject image is incident from an optical system having the lens, the control unit moves the lens, and thus the subject image is focused on.

It is assumed that there are a plurality of areas where a transfer is to be performed at a long pitch, in an original film, and a plurality of areas where a transfer is to be performed at a short pitch in each of the areas where a transfer is to be performed at a long pitch. On a sub-scan stage the original document is sub-scanned in the area where a transfer is to be performed at a short pitch, by performing at least one small step transferring, which is a transfer performed at a short pitch. Thereafter, a large step transferring which is a transfer performed at a long pitch, is performed on the sub-scan stage. The sub-scanning is repeated by performing the large step transferring and the small step transferring.

The invention provides an image scanning apparatus capable of obtaining an image signal in high quality even with existence of a non-effective picture in a scanning area. The apparatus comprises: an radiation unit for radiating scanning light onto a scanning area where an original is arranged; a photodetector for detecting an optical image formed by the scanning light which is reflected in the scanning area or transmits therethrough; a test drive unit for driving the radiation unit and the photodetector under predetermined drive condition; and an adjusting unit for adjusting the drive condition for the radiation unit and the photodetector in accordance with an output signal outputted from the photodetector by the driving. The photodetector has an overflow drain mechanism, and the adjusting unit adjusts an exposure of the photodetector at a brightest point of an effective picture of the optical image to approach its quantization exposure limit.

An image reading device selectively performs contrast adjustment on edge portions of the image, while suppressing contrast adjustment on noise and roughness of the image, thus obtaining a smooth and modulated image. Light emitted from a light source passes through or is reflected from an original document and is incident on a CCD line sensor, which outputs an electrical signal. This signal is input into an edge contrast unit, e.g., via a gain control amplifier, an A/D converter and a CCD signal processor. The edge contrast unit includes a computation unit by which edge contrast adjustment is accomplished selectively on input signals based on a comparison coefficient input from a comparison coefficient input unit and a contrast coefficient input from a contrast coefficient input unit. The resulting signal is stored in FIFO memory after passing through a normalizing processor, a DPI converter, and a LUT, for example.
