The methods, apparatus, systems and computer program products provide for sensing a magnetic field, emitted by a short-range communication source, to activate short-range communication modules in a mobile terminal. In addition to sensing the magnetic field, the terminal may rely on other parameters, such as operational state of the terminal, contextual information and the like, to determine if the short-range communication module should be activated. As such, the invention reduces the overall power consumption of the terminal by limiting the active state of the short-range communication module. By conserving power the mobile terminal is capable of operating for longer periods of time without requiring charging or replacement of the power supply.

Methods, apparatus, systems and computer program products for energy management of short-range communication modules in mobile terminal devices

The invention relates to a method for discovering services for a wireless multimode terminal with a plurality of radio interfaces. In order to improve the efficiency of a wireless multimode terminal in terms of power consumption and user-friendliness, an indication is sent to a multimode terminal in the mobile network, the indication indicating that services may be locally available for the multimode terminal via at least one short-range wireless network. The indication is received in the multimode terminal, and information is collected, based on the indication, about services available via at least one short-range wireless network. Based on the information collected, a service list is then compiled, the list describing at least one service available locally in one or more short-range wireless networks.

Service discovery in a wireless communication system

The invention relates to a mechanism for using services provided by a network in an environment including user-operated short-range wireless terminals and short-range wireless peripheral devices, such as wireless storage units, controllable by the user-operated terminals. A wireless peripheral device is informed that a network providing services is to be accessed, as a result of which the wireless peripheral device accesses the said network. A service is then selected from the infrastructure network by the user-operated terminal, while also indicating that the party requesting the selected service is the peripheral device. The selected service is delivered to the wireless peripheral device through the infrastructure network.

Control of peripheral devices in a short-range wireless communication system

The invention relates to a method for broadcasting beacon frames in a short-range wireless ad-hoc network including a plurality of wireless terminals. In order to improve the efficiency of the ad-hoc network in terms of power consumption, the terminal that defines the beacon interval for the network starts as a beacon broadcaster and introduces an identifier list in at least some of the beacon frames broadcast in the network. The identifier list, which includes identifiers of the wireless terminals belonging to the network, is utilized if another wireless terminal is to be selected as the beacon broadcaster.

Beacon transmission in short-range wireless communication systems

The invention relates to a method for controlling the operation of a short-range wireless terminal capable of operating in a first beacon-based network and in a second beacon-based network, and having an active state and a power save state in the first beacon-based network. For seamless operation in the two networks, the terminal moves to a power save state with respect to the first beacon-based network if operation in the second beacon-based network is required. However, the first beacon-based network is only informed that the terminal moves to a power save state and instead of powering down, the terminal becomes active in the second beacon-based network.

Control of a short-range wireless terminal

The invention relates to a method for controlling power consumption in a short-range wireless terminal. In order that the power save mode could be adapted to the traffic pattern of the terminal, the data traffic of the terminal is monitored and at least one parameter describing the data traffic is defined. Based on said at least one parameter and the beacon interval information received in beacon frames, the power state of the terminal is dynamically controlled so that the terminal is maintained in one of at least two power states including an active state and a power save state.

Adaptive power save mode for short-range wireless terminals

The invention relates to a method for selecting radio resources for a communication session in a wireless communication terminal. In order to facilitate the selection of quality of service between diversified terminals, terminal capabilities are described by a set of capability parameters, the set including at least one parameter indicative of the terminal's capabilities. Based on the set of capability parameters, a dedicated quality class set is defined for an application instance residing in the terminal, the quality class set including at least one quality class for the application instance. When a session is to be established between at least two application instances residing respectively in at least two terminals, at least one quality class is negotiated for the session, the at least one quality class being determined based on the dedicated quality class sets of the at least two application instances. Based on the negotiation, radio resources are then allocated for the session.

Selection of radio resources in a wireless communication device

For load balancing in a wireless communication network comprising at least one subscriber terminal (T, T, T) and a plurality of access points (AP, AP, AP), a load control device () is used which is located outside of said subscriber terminal, wherein said load control device is adapted to process information related to a load in said wireless communication network and to instruct roaming of said subscriber terminal from an associated access point to another one of said plurality of access points. Access point status information (APST) determined in said plurality of access points (S; S) is received and communication status information related to said plurality of access points (S; S) is determined. The subscriber terminal processes (S; S) these information into roaming support information (RSUP), which are in turn processed (S; S) in said load control device an access point related load based roaming analysis. On this basis, it is decided (S; S) by the load control device, whether said subscriber terminal is to be associated with another one of said plurality of access points.

Load balancing in wireless communication network

An emulator functionality is provided at both ends of a satellite communication link that is used between wireless network cells inside a vehicle, such as an aircraft, and a terrestrial communication system. The emulator is capable of providing required state signalling without a connection between a base station of the wireless network inside the vehicle and a base station controller of the terrestrial communication system. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the invention the satellite communication link can be switched to an off-state when it is not needed for transferring calls or other information. A further non-limiting exemplary embodiment of the invention provides for a use of alternative satellite connections depending on the location of the vehicle is provided.

The invention relates to a method for selecting an access point in a wireless communication system comprising mobile terminals and access points. To enable the mobile terminals to take into account the prevailing conditions within the entire coverage area of an access point more effectively than before, sets of attributes are sent from mobile terminals to the currently serving access point, each set to contain at least one attribute indicating the quality of a wireless link between the serving access point and the sending mobile terminal. Based on the sets, a service report describing current service conditions in the coverage area of the access point is formed and transmitted to at least one mobile terminal. This terminal examines the service report of at least one access point and, based on the examination, selects the access point to which a wireless link is to be established.

Selection of access point in a wireless communication system

The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for configuring an indoor base station for a cellular mobile telecommunications network. According to an advantageous embodiment of the inventive method, a mobile communications means is used to scan possible transmission frequencies on-site to find out free frequencies to operate on, and to transmit the results of scanning of the frequencies to the indoor base station and to choose proper parameters for the indoor base station. Disclosed herein is a radio system and method for routing a subscriber's call via a moving base station. The radio system includes at least one moving base station. A moving location area is formed using the service areas of the moving base station. A control unit of at least one operator is dedicated to controlling the operation of the moving base stations belonging to the moving location area.
