Device and method for dynamic range expansion in a virtual reality scene

The present disclosure involves expanding the dynamic range of low dynamic range images and concerns obtaining a first expansion exponent map for an image, and determining, for each pixel of the image, an expanded luminance value by performing an exponentiation with an expansion exponent value determined from the first expansion exponent map on a luminance value of the pixel, and can include calculating, for the pixel of the image, an expansion correcting value by using a modulating function that takes as input a value representative of the luminance of the pixel and is an increasing function whose increase is higher for higher input values, and subtracting the expansion correcting value from the expansion exponent value of the first expansion exponent map.

Inverse tone mapping method and corresponding device

For the processing of an image with a tone-mapping function, it is known to select a tone-mapping function among a reference collection of reference tone-mapping functions and to apply the selected tone-mapping function to colors of this image. When applying this method to images of a video content, it is proposed to add, after such a selection for an image, a step of validation of this selection for the next images of video content. Advantage: prevent too frequent changes of tone-mapping function inside a video content, lower temporal instabilities and visual discomfort during visualization.

A method and apparatus for inverse tone mapping of an LDR image with computer generated imagery components, such components being also called visual effects, are disclosed. The disclosed method includes accessing a first LDR image, the first LDR image being obtained from at least one computer generated imagery component rendered and composited into an LDR reference image or background plate; determining an HDR lighting indication responsive to information extracted from a part of the first LDR image and a respective part of a first intermediate HDR image obtained by applying a first pass inverse tone mapping to the first LDR image; obtaining a second intermediate HDR image by applying a second pass inverse tone mapping to the LDR reference image; obtaining the first HDR image from the computer generated imagery components rendered using HDR lighting indication and composited into the second intermediate HDR image.

Method for inverse tone mapping of an image with visual effects

The disclosure relates generally to the field of high dynamic range (HDR) imaging and addresses the way of expanding the dynamic range of low dynamic range images. The present invention relates to a method for detection of film mode or camera mode of a video sequence. This detection is carried out using histograms of video levels of frames of the video sequence. Difference histograms are calculated then compared with each other so as to generate difference parameters for each video frame of the sequence. The pattern formed by these difference parameters is then compared with predetermined patterns to deduce the mode, film or camera, of the sequence. The advantage of this method is that it requires just small memory resources for its implementation and can therefore be implanted in an FPGA circuit.

The present invention is situated within the frame or video processing domain and more particularly in the domain of video interpolation. It relates to a device for generating an interpolated frame from source frames temporarily surrounding it.
