The systems and methods of the invention ensure system operation reliability and maximize market economic efficiency of energy and ancillary services trading in competitive market environment. A process/method comprising optimal clearing and competitive price formation for a variety of market commodities that are supplied and consumed by a numerous market entities of a variety of types. The solution process is arranged and facilitated in controllable and efficient manner.

A method and system for energy management in a power system. Target performance standards are calculated and used to measure performance and to comply with regulatory performance standards. The target performance standards are based on probability theory and are used to control power generation. The amount of corrective power necessary is based on the calculated target performance standards and the deviations of current performance values from the target standards.

A system and method for generator startup cost modeling using a time counter are described herein. A method and system according to the invention may include assigning a binary value to one or more time segment variables each associated with an increment of the time counter wherein the sum of the one or more time segment variables is greater than or equal to a binary startup variable. Certain exemplary embodiments provide a method comprising: for an electrical power system comprising a plurality of committed electrical power generating units: for each of the committed electrical power generating units, obtaining an optimal power output temporal trajectory, the optimal power output temporal trajectory constrained by a ramping limit of the committed electrical power generating unit; obtaining an optimal power reserve temporal trajectory for each of the committed electrical power generating units; and assigning each of the optimal power output temporal trajectories to the respective electrical power generating units so that, over a predetermined consecutive set of time intervals, an integrated cost of system power output is minimized and a system reserve requirement is met.

A method and system according to the invention may include assigning a binary value to one or more commitment status variables each associated with an increment of time. The method and system may also assign a binary value to a time-dependent startup status variable. The method and system may implement the following constraints. The startup status variable minus the current commitment variable plus the subsequent previous commitment status variable is greater than or equal to zero, the startup status variable plus the subsequent previous commitment status variable is less than or equal to one, and the startup status variable minus the current commitment status variable is less than or equal to zero. Generating units are each assigned a temporal trajectory of output power over consecutive time intervals. The allocation of available resources is assigned so as to minimize costs associated with meeting changing loads.
