Systems, apparatuses, and methods for monitoring a catalyst health parameter are provided. A system includes one or more processing circuits having one or more memory devices coupled to one or more processors. The one or more memory devices store instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to: receive information indicative of at least one of a temperature of exhaust gas entering the aftertreatment system, a time at idle, or a mass flow of exhaust gas; determine a catalyst health management criteria based on the information; determine a catalyst health indicator based on the catalyst health management criteria being met; compare the determined catalyst health indicator to a predetermined health threshold criteria; and provide a notification based on the determined catalyst health indicator being less than the predetermined health threshold criteria.

Systems and apparatuses include a circuit structured to receive information indicative of a catalyst health, receive information from a sensor array indicative of a catalyst activity, determine a catalyst health management criteria has been met based on the information, determine a catalyst age based on the information indicative of the catalyst activity and the catalyst health management criteria being met, compare the determined catalyst age to a predetermined age threshold, and provide a notification when the determined catalyst age exceeds the predetermined age threshold.

A method includes receiving information indicative of a temperature of exhaust gas emitted from an engine operating at an engine speed, determining that the temperature of the exhaust gas is below a predefined temperature threshold, determining an engine load sized to increase the temperature of the exhaust gas above the predefined temperature threshold, increasing a load on the engine to the determined engine load while maintaining the engine at the engine speed by increasing at least one of a fuel flow rate and a fuel flow pressure of the fuel pump powered by the engine, and diverting the excess fuel from the fuel flow path upstream of the engine. Increasing at least one of the fuel flow rate and the fuel pressure of the fuel pump causes excess fuel to be provided to the engine than is necessary to maintain the engine at the engine speed.

Systems, apparatus and methods include control techniques for controlling operation of pre-mixed internal combustion engines in response to a load shedding event. The control techniques determine, in response to the load shedding event, a number of cycles in which to skip combustion of the fuel in the at least one cylinder based on an air-fuel ratio limit in the exhaust flow, prevent combustion of the fuel in the at least one cylinder during the number of skipped cycles, and combust the fuel in the at least one cylinder each time the number of skipped cycles are complete.

Described herein are various embodiments of an apparatus, a system, and a methods for reducing NOemissions using ammonia storage on an SCR catalyst. For example, according to one embodiment, an apparatus for controlling an SCR system of an internal combustion engine system includes an ammonia storage module and a reductant dosing module. The ammonia storage module determines an ammonia storage surface coverage on an SCR catalyst of the SCR system and an ammonia compensation value based on one of an excess ammonia flow rate entering the SCR catalyst and an excess NOflow rate entering the SCR catalyst. The reductant dosing module that generates a reductant dosing command based on the ammonia compensation value.

According to one representative embodiment, an engine system properties controller includes an exhaust aftertreatment system module, a powertrain module, and a combustion module. The exhaust aftertreatment system module is configured to generate an exhaust conditions vector request. The powertrain module is configured to receive the exhaust conditions vector request from the exhaust aftertreatment system module and generate at least one engine operating condition target based on the exhaust conditions vector request. The combustion module is configured to receive the at least one engine operating condition target and generate at least one engine controls command based on the at least one engine operating condition target.

According to one representative embodiment, an apparatus includes a duty cycle factor module and a NOconversion mode selection module. The duty cycle factor module is configured to determine a duty cycle factor of an internal combustion engine where the duty cycle factor represents predicted driving conditions of a vehicle in which the internal combustion engine is housed. The NOconversion mode selection module is configured to command NOconversion in the SCR system according to a first NOconversion mode if the duty cycle factor is within a duty cycle factor range and according to a second NOconversion mode if the duty cycle factor is not within the duty cycle factor range.

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for enhancing the efficiency of an exhaust aftertreatment application. The method may include determining the current operating conditions of the application, the optimal operating conditions of a target component, and the performance criteria of a conditioning component relative to the optimal operating conditions. The method may include determining an optimal fraction of an exhaust flow to pass through the conditioning component to achieve the optimal operating conditions of the target component. The method may further include manipulating a bypass valve position based on the optimal fraction of exhaust flow to pass through the conditioning component. The target component may be a selective catalyst reduction (SCR) component that operates optimally at a designed NO/NOmole ratio. The conditioning component may be a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) that affects the NO/NOmole ratio. A method is thereby provided to operate an exhaust aftertreatment application more efficiently relative to an application without the invention.
