A pressure activated two-way slit valve assembly is designed to be used in combination with, but not limited to, a high flow rate catheter to prevent accidental ingestion of air or loss of blood if the closure cap comes off during non-use of the catheter. In addition, the potential for occlusion of the catheter due to blood clots in the catheter and catheter related infection is substantially reduced. The pressure activated two-way slit valve assembly includes a first end, a second end, a wall defining a dumbbell shaped channel, and a flexible, thin disk having a slit and positioned within the pressure activated two-way slit valve assembly to reside within the dumbbell shaped channel. The slit and the dumbbell shaped channel are sized to enable the slit to deform in response to a predetermined pressure differential across the slit to allow fluid to pass therethrough.

Catheter tubes of elastomeric material having novel lumen shapes which prevent occlusion and accommodate continued liquid flow even when kinked. Also, catheter tube slit valves are disclosed, the walls of which are not chemically weakened. Symmetrical and asymmetrical versions of said slit valves are disclosed. Combinations of highly reliable slit valves and catheter tubes are disclosed. Independently operable multi-lumen catheter assemblies of synthetic material, such as silicone rubber are disclosed, wherein the distal end of each lumen is normally closed by a three-position slit valve formed in a catheter tube covering. Multi-lumen catheters, and related methods, are also disclosed wherein the lumens are internal at the proximal and distal ends of the catheter tube but comprise separate tubes in between whereby, following placement of the distal end of the catheter tube in the body cavity of a patient, the unified proximal end of the tube is manipulated, sometimes subcutaneously, with the ultimately exposed tubes being thereafter severed and each equipped with a hub at a convenient exposed body site for selective independent passage of influent and effluent liquid along each lumen.

A layered peel away hollow sheath for temporarily creating a passageway into a desired body site of a medical patient for placement of one end of an indwelling device at the body site through the sheath, the sheath wall comprising at least two layers, the inside layer being cylindrical and the outside layer comprising two semi-cylindrical segments defining opposed axially-directed slits or slots therebetween which comprises tear lines such that the sheath manually tears axially along the single layer tear lines into two pieces for removal of the sheath from around the indwelling device.

Medical layered peel away sheath and methods

A port/catheter tube assembly which insures a stable essentially inseparable connection between the hollow male outlet stem of the port and the proximal end of the catheter tube, thereby insuring a continual supply of medication to the desired patient site while preventing inadvertent harm caused by unintended leakage of such medication into improper tissue sites due to separation of the catheter tube from the port or due to kinking.

Catheters and methods

Apparatus and methods are disclosed by which (a) the exposed length of an indwelling medical catheter tube is permanently extended, (b) a damaged exposed end of an indwelling catheter tube is repaired and thereby once more rendered safe and effective, and (c) a hub is easily and permanently connected to an exposed trailing end of an indwelling intravenous catheter tube or an extension thereof, all with little or no trauma to the patient.

A blood-gas sampler in the nature of a syringe comprising a hollow internally stepped cylindrical barrel and a coaxial stepped plunger having one or more nesting stepped seals at the leading end thereof, the assembly accommodating arterial blood aspiration causing retraction of the plunger within the barrel and discharge of blood from the hollow of the barrel caused by advancement of the plunger. A clip prevents inadvertent excessive retraction of the plunger during the blood aspiration and blood discharge phases.

An intravenous catheter apparatus comprising an intravenous catheter tube, a manually guidable circumferentially deformable elastomeric bore-defining tubular inserter integral with and in axial alignment with the catheter tube for use with a patient, and a needle concentric within the catheter tube and inserter and extending through at least part of the bore of the inserter to beyond the distal end of the catheter tube, the inserter comprising opposed laterally extending wings adapted to be manually compressed together from an at-rest position to a needle control position, the bore of the inserter being sufficiently large to permit retraction of the needle from the catheter tube and the inserter when the inserter is at rest, and when the inserter wings are compressed to the needle control position being sufficiently constricted to enable the inserter to grip the needle firmly to permit inserter-forced injection of the distal end of the needle into the body of a patient.

Intravenous catheter apparatus and method

A disposable assembly and associated method for placing a catheter tube or plastic cannula into the body of a patient, the assembly being initially disposed in a sterile package and comprising a hollow cannulated needle sharpened at one end and comprising a connector in the form of a hub at the trailing end thereof, the connector being joined to an elongated semi-rigid sheath having a longitudinal slit along one location. The flexible cannula of radiopaque silicone rubber, is initially disposed within the semi-rigid sheath with the leading end thereof resting within the hollow of the needle. A stylet telescopically rests within the entire length of the plastic cannula with the exception of the leading tip thereof and is of such dimension as to stiffen the concentrically disposed plastic cannula. An inserter mechanism comprising a laterally projecting handle is connected to the trailing end of the stylet such that the handle thereof extends through the longitudinal slit in the semi-rigid sheath and is exposed for manual manipulation. The trailing end of the semi-rigid slitted sheath is plugged and/or capped to maintain sterility. In use, once the assembly has been removed from the sterile package and venipuncture has been accomplished, the catheter tube or plastic cannula is concurrently advanced into the vein with the stylet through manual manipulation of the inserter handle, so as to preserve the sterilizing of the catheter tube following which the plastic cannula is retained in the vein and, the remainder of the catheter placement assembly other than the plastic cannula is retracted rearwardly and entirely removed from the plastic cannula at the trailing end thereof and discarded. The relationship between the plastic cannula and the inserter precludes reverse displacement of the plastic cannula during insertion thereby obviating any possibility of shearing of the plastic cannula into the vein. Thereafter, a suitable plug receiving female adapter is retrieved from the sterile package and is affixed to the trailing end of the plastic cannula to accommodate fluid flow through the cannula, usually from a syringe or infusion system.

Catheter placement assembly

A catheter placement unit comprising a Y adapter with a side port for coupling a catheter tube to a fluid infusion unit and including a resilient sleeve within the axial bore of the Y adapter at the proximal end of the catheter placement unit through which a piercing needle or the like snugly passes in the initial assembled condition. A manually compressible mechanism circumscribes the resilient sleeve and, upon proper setting preferably before but also after venipuncture and needle removal, squeezes the resilient sleeve to firmly occlude the inside passage of the resilient sleeve to prevent fluid loss.
