Granular composite fertilizer compositions are prepared by applying a liquid mixture of urea and formaldehyde to a dry substrate such as a phosphorus source, a potassium source, a secondary nutrient source, a micronutrient source or mixtures thereof and reacting the liquid mixture in situ to form methylene urea reaction products which promote binding of the substrate into a granular composite while granulating the substrate at the same time that the liquid mixture reacts in order to form the granular composite fertilizer compositions.

Processes for preparing granular composite fertilizer compositions and products produced thereby

A controlled release fertilizer formed from nutrient granules having intermediate or precoat layers of organic oil, such as raw linseed oil, prior to application of a polymeric, encapsulating coat. The precoat may also contain a binding agent, such as a fine clay, and a drier. The new fertilizer composition is made by a process of applying the oil precoat, but not curing it until after the encapsulating coat is applied. The use of the precoat provides more desirable controlled (delayed) release characteristics at a lower weight of the encapsulating coat, particularly for nutrient cores having a relatively large number of surface imperfections or discontinuities.

Extended residual, controlled release sulfur coated fertilizers having polymeric topcoats applied over a sulfur coating layer are prepared wherein the sulfur coating contains a sufficient amount of a crystalline sulfur allotrope in combination with at least a minimal level of carbon disulfide insoluble amorphous sulfur to maintain the sulfur coating in a pliable, resilient condition at the time at which the polymeric topcoat is applied over the sulfur coating. The presence of such sulfur allotrope is demonstrated by a shoulder endotherm appearing on a differential scanning calorimetry thermogram within a transition temperature range of about 84.degree. C.-97.degree. C.

Extended residual, controlled release sulfur coated fertilizer products having polymeric topcoats applied thereover are provided which release the fertilizer at a diffusion controlled rate essentially linearly over time. Processes are also provided for preparation of such products.

A carrierless granular slow release fertilizer composition is prepared by spraying a urea-formaldehyde resin composition having a U/F molar ratio ranging from 2.4 to 13.3 onto finely divided solid particulate raw materials and cooling the resulting sprayed product to solidify the resin composition providing a matrix within which the solid particulate raw materials are bound. The fertilizer composition is characterized by having desired physical and chemical properties in regard to chain length of nitrogen polymers in the product, nitrogen release patterns, hardness and dust free nature of the product and the dispersibility characteristics of the product. The product has an abrasion index of about 0.800-1.000.

Granular slow release fertilizer composition and process

Methylene diurea, either alone or as a component of methylene urea polymers acts as a gelling agent for producing a gel composition capable of suspending particles which are insoluble in a liquid medium. Methylene diurea as the gelling agent in a liquid medium can be used to obtain novel gel compositions in the absence of added thickener-suspending agents. The methylene diurea is present in an amount greater than the solubility limit of methylene diurea in the liquid medium and in an amount sufficient to provide a gel for suspending insoluble particles. The process for producing the gel composition includes subjecting a dry methylene urea composition in particulate form to a shearing action in a liquid medium wherein the methylene urea includes an amount of methylene diurea greater than the solubility limit of methylene diurea in the liquid medium. Controlled release nitrogen fertilizer compositions are obtained which exhibit agronomic advantages over conventional fluid nitrogen fertilizers and offer material handling and application advantages over dry forms of fertilizers.

Process of preparing a solid controlled release urea-formaldehyde fertilizer composition comprising preparing an aqueous mixture of urea, formaldehyde and ammonia, heating the mixture, acidifying the mixture to initiate methylene urea polymerization and heating to complete methylene urea polymerization and dry the reaction products. The process is carried out under conditions such that the majority of polymeric nitrogen present in the final product consists of short chain methylene urea polymers selected from the group consisting of methylene diurea, dimethylene triurea and mixtures thereof.

Process of preparing solid controlled release fertilizer composition

A controlled release particulate fertilizer composition prepared by the reaction of urea and formaldehyde comprising polymeric nitrogen in the form of methylene urea polymers of varying chain length. The majority of the polymeric nitrogen consists of short chain polymers selected from the group consisting of methylene diurea, dimethylene triurea and mixtures thereof and the average degree of polymerization of urea and formaldehyde is greater than 1.5. The fertilizer compositions combine safety and high levels of plant nutrient efficiency.

A controlled-release particulate fertilizer composition is prepared by compacting and agglomerating particles of a foamed urea-formaldehyde condensation product into a sheet having a specific gravity of at least 1.40, the molar ratio of urea to formaldehyde in said condensation product being from 1.3:1 to 2.4:1, comminuting the compacted sheet into particulate form and separating and recovering the particles having a size of more than 30 mesh, substantially all said recovered particles having a ratio of largest to smallest particle of less than 3:1. The fertilizer is characterized by a high degree of uniformity from particle to particle in both composition and size, relatively high particle density and a combination of both quick initial and long lasting nutrient release.
