An improved process for making a structural foamed polymer, a multilayer polymer film, sheet or tube, a pultrusion polymer profile, a compression molded extruded fiber reinforced polymer pre-form, a strand foamed polymer and a SCORIM formed polymer article. The improvement includes the step of dispersing a multi-layered silicate material with the polymer so that the polymer has dispersed therein single layers of silicate material, double layers of silicate material, triple layers of silicate material, four layers of silicate material, five layers of silicate material and more than five layers of silicate material, the volume percent of the one, two, three, four and five layers of silicate material greater than the volume percent of the more then five layers of silicate material. In each of the above embodiments an important benefit of the instant invention is the orientation of the plane of the layers of silicate material. Preferably, most of the layers of silicate material have substantially the same orientation within thirty degrees of angle. Such orientation improves the properties of the product and provides a practical way to make larger products. The amount of multi-layered silicate material used is preferably between one and twenty percent.

Multilayer films comprising a quiet film layer having noise dampening properties and at least one second layer which are particularly useful for, ostomy bags (colostomy, ileostomy), trans-dermal delivery systems (TDDS), cosmetic patches, incontinence bags, medical collection bags, parenteral solution bags, and food packaging, as well as for protective clothing and soil fumigation applications. The quiet layer comprises a polymer resin or polymer resin composition having a Tangent Delta value of at least 0.25 at a temperature within the range of &minus;5&deg; C. and 15&deg; C. or at least 0.32 at a temperature within the range of &minus;12&deg; C. to &minus;5&deg; C., and the at least one second layer has a storage modulus G&prime; equal to or greater than 2&times;10 N/cm .

Multilayer films with quiet film layer having noise dampening properties

Essentially amorphous non-chlorinated polymeric films are provided which are effective barriers to odors and organic molecules, making them particularly useful for ostomy bags (colostomy, ileostomy), trans-dermal delivery systems (TDDS), cosmetic patches, incontinence bags, medical collection bags, parenteral solution bags, and food packaging, as well as for protective clothing and soil fumigation applications. The barrier layers of the present invention can be used as monolayers or can be a component film of a multilayer structure. The barrier films may be used with or without other film layers that promote reduced noise emission. Alternately, single and multi-layer films may omit the barrier layer in favor of the reduced noise emission layers.

Essentially amorphous, non-chlorinated polymeric barrier films and method of using such films

A multilayer protective film useful in insulated wall structures of appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, or boiler units, for example. The multilayer protective film has a substantially polyolefin protective layer. The multilayer protective film also has a substantially polyolefin surface capable of bonding to polyurethane foam without the use of an adhesive. The multilayer protective film bonds to and protects thermoplastic liners from attack by blowing agents used in the production of polyurethane foam. The multilayer protective film is also adaptable to be regrind-compatible into thermoplastic liners made of styrenic polymers.

A multilayer film useful for making plastic adhesive labels for glass substrates such as glass bottles. The multilayer films contain a base layer, an adhesive layer, and optionally an intermediate layer to improve interlayer bonding between the base layer and the adhesive layer. The adhesive layer comprises a heat-activated thermoplastic adhesive that is not tacky at room temperature. Films of the present invention are sufficiently non blocking at room temperature so as to not require the use of a separate release liner. The film can be utilized in conventional graphics printing operations and made into labels. Labels made from films of the present invention can be thermally adhered to glass substrates and exhibit sufficient adhesion to glass substrates to withstand washing/rinsing, filling, and pasteurization processes utilized in the bottling industry.

Clear monolayer label filmstock

A deformable label comprising a printable film facestock having at least one layer containing incompatible polymers. The printable film facestock exhibits significantly reduced die-face buildup during extrusion of the printable film facestock when compared to the die-face buildup exhibited by film facestock of the prior art. The present invention provides for monolayer film facestock containing incompatible polymers and colorants. The present invention also allows printable film facestock to be produced in a more cost-effective manner.

A multilayer film useful for making plastic adhesive labels for glass substrates such as glass bottles. The multilayer films contain a base layer, an adhesive layer, and optionally an intermediate layer to improve interlayer bonding between the base layer and the adhesive layer. The adhesive layer comprises a terpolymer of ethylene, 3-10 weight percent of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid (e.g. acrylic acid or methyacrylic acid), and 3-25 weight percent of an unsaturated ester (e.g., methyl, ethyl, or n-butyl acrylate or methacrylate). The base layer preferably comprises oriented polypropylene or oriented polyester, but may also comprise high density polyethylene or PETG. The multilayer film can be utilized in conventional graphics printing operations and do not require the use of a separate release liner. Labels made from films of the present invention exhibit sufficient adhesion to glass substrates to withstand washing/rinsing, filling, and pasteurization processes utilized in the bottling industry.

An oxygen and moisture impermeable multilayer barrier film is provided including a barrier layer comprising a homopolymer of vinylidene chloride or a copolymer of vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride or methyl methacrylate. The barrier layer is coextruded with or laminated to at least one heat sealable skin layer comprising a thermoplastic polyurethane, a substantially linear copolymer of ethylene and an .alpha.-olefin, or a homogeneously-branched linear olefin resin to form the barrier film. The multilayer film may be used for reusable ostomy bags, for systems for the transdermal delivery of drugs, and for heat sealable bags used in packaging.

An oxygen and moisture impermeable multilayer barrier film which is free of halogens and which may be produced by coextrusion or lamination techniques is provided. The film provides excellent adhesion between layers, has quietness, odor barrier, and softness characteristics, and provides a heat sealable surface for the fabrication of bags. The barrier film includes a halogen-free barrier layer and at least one heat sealable skin layer. The heat sealable skin layer includes either a thermoplastic polyurethane, a substantially linear copolymer of ethylene and an .alpha.-olefin having a density in the range of from about 0.87-0.92 gm/cc and from about 0.01 to 3 long chain branches/1000 carbon atoms along the polymer backbone, a homogeneously-branched linear polyolefin resin, or a blend of an ultra low density polyolefin resin with a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate.

Labelstock for in-mold labeling purposes which is characterized by a tensile ultimate elongation per ASTM D-882 of at least about 10% in one or both of the machine and transverse directions, and which contains a sufficient amount of one or more slip additives to prevent a significant degree of edge-welding between adjacent stacked sheets of the labelstock on a high type die cutter in an in-mold labeling process.
