A fuel cell stack in which unit cells are stacked, wherein the unit cell includes: a membrane electrode assembly; an insulating member; a first separator; a second separator; and a gasket, a hole penetrates through the insulating member and the first and second separators, the gasket extends around the hole on the insulating member, a flow path portion is formed in at least one of the first and second separators, the first and second separators define a communicating portion, one of the first and second separators includes: first and second protruding portions; and a recessed portion, at least a part of the communicating portion is defined by the first and second protruding portions, the recessed portion, and the other of the first and second separators, and the first separator includes a support portion contacting and supporting the insulating member on a back side of the gasket.

Fuel cell stack

A fuel cell stack includes: a membrane electrode assembly; and first and second separators joined to each other, wherein first and third fluid groove portions face each other in a stacking direction in which the membrane electrode assembly and the first and second separators are stacked, second and fourth fluid groove portions face each other in the stacking direction, and first and second coolant groove portions face each other in the stacking direction and define a common coolant flow path.

Fuel cell stack having improved joining strength between separators

An anode separator of a fuel cell forms: a plurality of gas flow channels arranged in parallel to let a fuel gas flow to an MEA; a supply passage configured to supply the plurality of gas flow channels with the fuel gas; and a recovery passage configured to recover the fuel gas from the plurality of gas flow channels. The plurality of gas flow channels include: a gas flow channel connects the supply passage and the recovery passage; and a gas flow channel having the supply passage side blocked.

Fuel cell

A separator has a concavo-convex structure formed in mutually reversed shapes on two opposite sides thereof to define flow paths of different fluids on the respective two sides. The concavo-convex structure includes multiple first projections formed and protruded on one side of the two opposite sides and arranged at intervals having a preset regularity. The concavo-convex structure also includes multiple second projections formed and protruded on the other side of the two opposite sides in a specific area corresponding to an area for formation of the multiple first projections on the one side and arranged at intervals having a preset regularity. The concavo-convex structure further includes reinforcing elements protruded on the one side. Each of the reinforcing elements is formed as a convex in a specific shape of connecting multiple positions where the first projections are expected to be formed according to the preset regularity, while avoiding positions corresponding to the second projections formed on the other side. This arrangement effectively prevents a potential trouble caused by deformation of the separator due to a pressure difference between the flow pressures of the respective fluids flowing on the respective sides of the separator.

In at least one of flow distribution areasprovided on a separator, plurality of first projectionsformed in a region corresponding to a first section (parted regionsand) of a center area (including parted regionsthrough) having a relatively high flow rate of a first fluid (refrigerant) are designed to have a larger diameter of a cross section than plurality of first projectionsformed in a region corresponding to a second section (parted region) of the center area having a relatively low flow rate of the first fluid. This arrangement effectively attains a substantially uniform flow rate distribution of a fluid in a fluid flow path formed on a separator, which is configured to have concavo-convex structures formed in a mutually reversed relation on two opposed sides thereof.
