A liquid crystal panel () modulates illuminating light in accordance with the transmittance, and displays images on a screen. A backlight () emits the illuminating light to the liquid crystal panel () such that amounts of the illuminating light differ for each light emitting area of the screen. A backlight control unit () controls emission brightness of the backlight () for each light emitting area. A local gradation converting unit () performs gradation conversion on an image signal, and acquires a brightness value for each pixel after the conversion. A backlight driving unit () controls the transmittance for each pixel on the basis of the acquired brightness values after the conversion. The local gradation converting unit sets conversion characteristics for pixels to be processed in the image signal such that the brightness values of the pixels to be processed are low as the lightness of the periphery of the pixels to be processed is high, and performs gradation conversion using the set conversion characteristics.

An optical system has a light amount adjustment function. An imaging unit reads an optical image of the subject that is formed by the optical system. An A/D converter subjects an output of the imaging unit to A/D conversion. A backlight correction unit converts the tones of an image read by the A/D converter using a conversion characteristic selected differently according to a spatial position and at least increases the luminance level of a dark region of the image. An instruction unit instructs to start backlight correction. A control unit operates the backlight correction unit based on an instruction signal output from the instruction unit, and decreases an exposure light amount of the optical system by a predetermined amount.

In the three-dimensional imaging device (three-dimensional image processing device), the depth acquisition unit acquires L depth information and R depth information from a three-dimensional image. The image correction unit adjusts disparities of edge portion areas of a subject based on the L depth information and the R depth information such that the normal positions of the edge portion areas of the subject are farther away. Accordingly, when a three-dimensional image acquired by the three-dimensional imaging device is three-dimensionally displayed, the edge areas of the subject are displayed having a sense of roundness. As a result, a three-dimensional image that has been subjected to processing by this three-dimensional image processing device is a high-quality three-dimensional image that can appropriately reproduce the three-dimensional appearance and sense of thickness of the subject and has little of the cardboard effect.
