A water-soluble methine compound represented by the following general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2, which may be the same or different, each represents a non-metallic atomic group required for forming a 5-membered or 6-membered nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring; R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, which may be the same or different, each represents an alkyl group; Q.sub.1 and Q.sub.2 each represents an atomic group required, in combination, for forming a 4-thiazolidinone ring, a 5-thiazolidinone ring, a 4-imidazolidinone ring, a 4-oxazolidinone ring, a 5-oxazolidinone ring, a 5-imidazolidinone ring or a 4-dithiolanone ring; L.sub.1, L.sub.2, L.sub.3, L.sub.4 and L.sub.5, which may be the same or different, each represents a methine group; R represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an aryl group or a heterocyclic group; m represents 1 or 2; i and h each represents 0 or 1; l represents 1 or 2; and j and k each represents 0, 1, 2 or 3. A photographic silver halide emulsion containing said methine compound added in the form of an aqueous solution is also disclosed.

Water-soluble methine compounds useful in photographic silver halide

A silver halide photographic emulsion including a spectrally sensitizing dye and at least one compound represented by general formula [I] or general formula [II] are disclosed. ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.4 ', R.sub.5, R.sub.5 ', R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8, R.sub.9, R.sub.10, R.sub.11 and R.sub.12 represent hydrogen atoms or univalent organic residual groups.

A silver halide photographic emulsion containing at least one compound represented by following formula (I):

A silver halide photographic emulsion comprising a silver halide emulsion, at least one ascorbic acid compound, a bisaminostilbene compound substituted by a pyrimidine derivative, and at least one sensitizing dye as described herein, exhibits an increased inhibition of desensitization due to the use of a sensitizing dye and an increase in the spectral sensitivity of the photographic emulsion.

A spectrally sensitized silver halide photographic emulsion is disclosed, which comprises at least one alkali metal sulfite compound and at least one ascorbic acid compound.

Silver halide photographic light-sensitive material

A silver halide photographic emulsion comprising at least one spectral sensitizing dye having the following general formula (I):

A photoresponsive material containing a dye compound having a cyclodextrin or its derivative as a substituent. The photoresponsive material exhibits increased light absorptivity by increasing the amount of spectral sensitizer, the dye compound. The photoresponsive material is useful as a photographic emulsion and the like.

Direct positive silver halide photographic emulsion

A silver halide photographic light-sensitive material is disclosed. The material is comprised of a support base having provided thereon a hydrophilic colloid layer and a silver halide emulsion layer. The silver halide emulsion layer contains tubular silver halide grains having a diameter at least 3 times their thickness and also contains a compound represented by general formula (I) or (II): ##STR1## the substituents are defined within the specification. The material obtains the advantages of utilizing tabular silver halide grains while having a reduced dependents of its photographic properties on development processing conditions which normally effect materials containing tabular silver halide grains.

A photographic element comprising a support and at least one silver halide emulsion layer. The photographic element contains at least one layer containing at least one of the dyes represented by the following formula (I), (II), (III), (IV), (V), (VI), (VII) or (VIII): ##STR1## wherein Z.sub.1 to Z.sub.10 ; R.sub.1 to R.sub.24 ; L.sub.1 to L.sub.18 ; Y.sub.1 to Y.sub.8 ; Q.sub.1 to Q.sub.4 ; X.sub.1 to X.sub.3 ; Ar; h, m, p and r; and t.sub.1 to t.sub.3 are described in the specification.

A silver halide photographic light-sensitive material is described containing at least one electron-donative, silver halide-adsorptive compound represented by the following general formula (A) or (B), which is not a spectral sensitizing agent for silver halide or a nucleating agent:

A silver halide photographic emulsion in which tabular silver halide grains having a diameter-to-thickness ratio of 5 or more account for 50% or more of the whole silver halide grains in terms of projected area, said silver halide emulsion containing at least one cyanine dye represented by the following general formula (I) and at least one compound represented by the following general formula (II) and/or at least one compound represented by the following general formula (III): ##STR1## wherein the substituents are as defined in the claims. The silver halide photographic emulsion is an extremely sensitive, spectrally sensitized emulsion.
