The disclosure relates to systems and methods for hydrogen production from an underground formation by providing heat to a first set of fractures to convert a hydrocarbon (e.g., methane, ethane, propane) present in the underground formation into hydrogen and producing the hydrogen from a second set of fractures.

Systems and methods for hydrogen production from an underground formation

A method includes extracting natural gas from a subsurface formation including a conventional gas reservoir via a first wellbore penetrating the subsurface formation, processing the natural gas in a surface processing facility and thereby generating hydrogen and a carbon dioxide (CO) brine, injecting at least a portion of the hydrogen into the subsurface formation via a second wellbore penetrating the subsurface formation for hydrogen storage, and injecting the CObrine into a saline aquifer forming part of the subsurface formation via a third wellbore penetrating the subsurface formation.

Closed loop hydrogen production and storage

A method and system for both enhancing oil recovery of a reservoir and permanently sequestering carbon dioxide (CO) is described. The method includes dissolving COin a base fluid at a surface location of an injection formation, forming a dense CO-brine solution, introducing the dense CO-brine solution into an injection well, accumulating a volume of the dense CO-brine solution in a structural low, displacing a native formation fluid from the injection well, increasing a fluid drive pressure from the injection well to a producing well, and displacing hydrocarbons of the producing well. The system includes an injection system in fluid communication with an injection well, a production well of the hydrocarbon production formation, and a dense CO-brine solution that has a density greater than a native formation fluid of the injection formation.

Method for using COstorage in structural lows to enhance reservoir drive mechanisms

A computer system and method of automatically generating a Local Grid Refinement (LGR) gridded model of a gas reservoir. A geologic file includes information identifying the locations of one or more wells according to root grid cells within a volume of the earth to be modeled. User inputs specify the number of hydraulic fractures from each well, and such parameters as the fracture length, etc. User inputs also specify the number of 'splits' of the root grid cells containing hydraulic fractures; those root grid cells are then split into finer resolution grid cells of increasing width within the root grid cells containing the fractures. For horizontal wells, user inputs indicate the number of splits of root grid cells containing the lateral portions of the wellbore. Non-orthogonal and complex fractures are processed by a 'nested' LGR approach. Geologic properties are assigned to each grid cell, with a tensorial adjustment included for non-orthogonal fractures, and the resulting model is available for simulation.
