A process for preparing oil-soluble nitrogen-containing compounds which comprises subjecting nitrogen-containing telogens and alpha-olefin taxogens to radical telomerization reaction. The nitrogen-containing compounds are mixtures of telomers having an average molecular weight not less than 300 and a nitrogen content of from 0.1 to 10 wt %. The compound may be further reacted with boron-bearing compounds or boron compounds to obtain oil-soluble nitrogen and boron-containing compounds. These compounds are useful as additives for fuel oils and lubricating oils.

Process for preparing oil-soluble nitrogen-containing compounds

A sysnthetic lubricating oil comprising at least one monosubstituted naphthalene derivative such as .beta.-t.-amylinaphthalene, .beta.-(1,1-dimethyldecyl) naphthalene or .beta.-(.alpha.,.alpha.-dimethylbenzyl) naphthalene.

Synthetic lubricating oils

A synthetic oil having excellent oxidation stability, comprising a mixture of monoalkylnaphthalenes which have each a secondary alkyl group of 6 to 24 carbon atoms and in which the specific molar ratio of .alpha.- to .beta.-substituted monalkylnaphthalenes is at least 1.0. The synthetic oil is useful as a thermal medium oil or as the main component of a synthetic lubricating oil.

Synthetic oils

A thermal medium oil comprising at least one monosubstituted naphthalene derivative such as .beta.-(1,1-dimethyloctyl) naphthalene, .beta.-(1,1-dimethylhexyl) naphthalene and 2-t.-amylnaphthalene.
