The root shape of a flash formed in the friction-welded joint is controlled by introducing an upset delay time interposed between termination of the friction step and commencement of the upset step and by controlling the upset displacement speed. This provides a friction-welded joint having a tensile strength and a fatigue strength which are comparable with those of TIG- or MIG- welded joints and enables aluminum alloy hollow members to be produced by friction welding instead of TIG or MIG welding. Typically, the upset delay time is 0.4 to 0.8 sec and the upset displacement speed is 5.0 to 70.0 mn/sec to form a flash having a flash root radius of 0.5 mm or more and a flash root angle of 75.degree. or less.

When aluminum members are arc welded at a welding speed of 2-7 minute, a quantity of input energy is remarkably reduced so as to form a welded joint free from deformation or strains. A weld bead with sufficient penetration is formed due to the high thermal conductivity of the aluminum material. The penetration is promoted by jagging the groove face. The heat balance between the aluminum members different in heat capacity from each other is stabilized by holding a jig having big heat capacity in contact with the aluminum member having smaller heat capacity, so that a good weld joint can be obtained regardless of the difference in heat capacity.

The present invention relates to a T-shaped connection frame for connecting car frames, in which a first member is connected to a second member via a joint member to form a 'T.' The joint member is formed by symmetrically dividing a rectangular tube between its two latch teeth located at the upper-center and lower-center inner walls. The rectangular tube also has protrusions at the left and right exterior walls. The joint member divided in this way has the latch teeth at the upper and lower tips of the mouth formed by the division and has the protrusion situated opposite the mouth so that the first member can be snapped on easily to this mouth and the second member can be attached to the protrusion at the opposite side. This structural arrangement makes the positioning of the frames very simple, obviates a make-shift attachment, and, at the same time, reduces the number of operation steps.
