An embodiment of this invention is directed to implementing motor control of suppressing the influence of the cogging of a motor while minimizing preliminary detection processing. According to this embodiment, a printing apparatus includes an acceleration sensor for detecting the acceleration of a moving carriage, and a control unit configured to control drive of the motor to suppress the influence of the cogging of the motor based on the detection by the acceleration sensor. In accordance with the relationship between the band of the cogging frequency of the motor and the band of the resonance frequency of the carriage, the control unit determines whether to use a cancel signal for feedback control of an encoder sensor. When the cancel signal is not used, the control unit changes the gain of feedback control of the acceleration sensor.

This invention has been made to cause a printing apparatus for conveying roll paper and performing printing to simultaneously attain a stable conveyance accuracy and prevent skewed conveyance independently of LF roller driving conditions and disturbance conditions that variously change as the roll paper state changes. For this purpose, a feed motor is used as a load generator for the roll paper. A section from a conveyance operation by the LF roller to the next conveyance operation is divided into a plurality of sub-sections. A feed mechanism is controlled by switching between a feeder load generation section and a feeder load zero section for each sub-section.

There are provided a roll sheet conveying apparatus and a sheet conveying control method wherein it is possible to control motor driving for conveying a roll sheet at appropriate timing to keep constant the tension of the sheet to be conveyed without performing a special identifying operation. For this feature, a relationship between friction load torque on the roll sheet and the mass of the roll sheet is previously stored in a storing unit, whereby the moment of inertia of the roll sheet can be detected at appropriate timing during printing. As a result, the optimum tension of the sheet to be conveyed can be maintained by appropriately adjusting the driving control of a sheet feeding motor and a conveying motor without performing a special identifying operation.
