A layered titanic acid produced by subjecting a layered titanate represented by a general formula: AM&#x25a1;TiO, wherein A and M represent metals having a valence of 1 to 3 and being different from each other, &#x25a1; represents a defect to be occupied by titanium, x is a positive and real number satisfying 0&#x3c;x&#x3c;1.0, y and z are positive and real numbers satisfying 0&#x3c;y+z&#x3c;1.0, to an acid treatment, to thereby substitute hydrogen ions or hydronium ions for 40 to 99% of A and/or M ions; a lamellar titanic acid produced by reacting the layered titanic acid with a basic compound, to thereby delaminate the layered titanic acid; and a lamellar titanium oxide produced by subjecting the lamellar titanic acid to a heat treatment or the like.
