A fuel cell anode for the oxidation of methanol, which contains at least one platinum metal or alloys of platinum metals as the primary, catalytically active component. The anode is characterized in that it also contains transition metal complexes of phthalocyanine or substituted phthalocyanines as cocatalyst, these amplifying the catalytic effect of the platinum metals and their alloys for the anodic oxidation of methanol.

A porous gas diffusion electrode for membrane fuel cells on an ion-conducting polymer. The electrode contains a finely divided electrocatalyst which is dispersed in a proton-conducting ionomer and has a total porosity of more than 40 to less than 75%. It supplies considerably improved performance data in comparison to known electrodes. The electrode can be produced by using pore-forming materials which are dissolved during the re-protonation of the ion-conducting polymers with sulfuric acid or are decomposed by the action of temperature.

Process for producing molten-carbonate fuel cells

The bonding of a porous metal layer to at least one surface of a cermet is accomplished, without a supporting metal netting in the green cermet blank, by using a reducible metal oxide in the green cermet blank and a reducible metal oxide layer on the surface or surfaces of the green blank. In the following reducing sintering step the metal component in the green blank and the porous metal layer are formed simultaneously resulting in an intimate strong bond between the cermet blank and the porous metal layer. Both reducible metal oxides may be the same. The resulting product, such as an electrode-diaphragm-electrode structure is well suited for use in water electrolysis, chlorine alkaline electrolysis, and in fuel cells.

Method for bonding a porous metal layer to a cermet surface

An electrical contact to a porous metal layer forming an anode of a diaphragm cell in a stack of such cells, is established by sintering a plurality of metal platelets into the porous metal layer. Preferably, the sintering-in of the platelets takes place simultaneously with the sintering of the porous metal layer. Each platelet is provided with an electrical contact metal pin extending out of the porous metal layer.
