There is described an apparatus for the corrosion protection of containers for the long time storage of radioactive materials, especially of spent fuel elements, in suitable geological formations which avoid corrosion of the container even with unexpected occurrence of water, or at least delay and minimize the corrosion. The apparatus consists essentially of sacrificial anodes 2 which are conductively joined to the containers 1 via connections 3.

Corrosion protection

Known containers for the transportation and/or storage of irradiated fuel elements have insertion canisters made of steel or massive bodies of non-ferrous metals. These have a high weight and possess no neutron shielding effect. These disadvantages are avoided by making an insertion canister consisting of graphite.

An improved container for transportation or storage of radioactive substances, especially spent nuclear fuel elements, has a cylindrical open-top thick-wall metallic body for shielding gamma radiation. A liner for the container has a top peripheral flange engaged with the bottom of a counterbore in the container open top. A thick gamma-ray shielding cover for the lining is disposed in the counterbore and screw means detachably secure both the lining flange and the cover to the body independently. The body has exterior generally parallel spaced cooling fins transversely intersected by flanges of lesser height to minimize fin cracks extending into the body. Neutron shielding is disposed in the exterior spaces between the fins and the flanges.

Transportation and/or storage containers for radioactive material

There are needed containers having an n-shielding for the transportation and storage or radioactive materials, especially irradiated fuel elements, which containers still remain intact even in extreme accidents and guarantees a good dissipation of heat. This is attained with containers which there is additionally arranged an n-shielding layer of a graphite material between the base body and the inner covering.

Container for the transportation and/or storage of radioactive material

Conveying and/or storage containers for radioactive materials which emit gamma and neutron radiation consist essentially of a container body having a shielding function for gamma radiation, cooling fins and a neutron shielding arranged between the cooling fins. For the protection of the neutron shielding it is provided with a cover.
