Method of producing water-soluble condensates and addition products

Phenyloxadiazolylanilines are prepared by reaction of a benzonitrile in an aqueous reaction medium first with hydroxylamine or an acid addition salt thereof to give a benzamideoxime and then with an isatoic anhydride to give a non-cyclic compound and subsequent cyclization, the reaction sequence being carried out in the presence of an anionic surfactant.

Preparation of phenyloxadiazolylanilines

Pyrazolo[5,1-b]quinazolones are prepared by reacting isatoic anhydrides with pyrazolones at from 100.degree. to 180.degree. C. in an inert organic solvent with simultaneous azeotropic removal of the water formed in the course of the reaction.

Pyrazolo[5,1-b]quinazolones are prepared by reacting isatoic anhydrides with 3-methylpyrazol-5-one in water as reaction medium at from 40.degree. to 150.degree. C. under from 1 to 5 bar.

Haloisatoic anhydrides are prepared by halogenating appropriately unsubstituted isatoic anhydrides with elemental chlorine or bromine in the presence of chlorosulfonic acid at from -10.degree. C. to +100.degree. C. using not less than 0.5 mole of halogen per mole of isatoic anhydride.

Azo compounds of the general formula ##STR1## where D is the radical of a diazo component of the aminoanthraquinone or aminophthalimide series, or the radical of a tetraazo component H.sub.2 N--D--NH.sub.2 having the formula: ##STR2## where Z is a direct bond, SO.sub.2, NH, CO, SO.sub.2 NH, CONH, NHCONH or NHCOCONH and the rings B are unsubstituted or substituted by Cl, Br, CH.sub.3, NO.sub.2 or OCH.sub.3 ; wherein said radical D is free from complex-forming hydroxyl and carboxyl groups and from ionic groups, n is 1 or 2, R is hydrogen or an aromatic radical, X is hydroxyl, alkyl, a carboxylic acid ester group, unsubstituted or substituted aryl or acylamino, and the ring A may be substituted but is free from SO.sub.3 H groups, are exceptionally suitable for use as pigments, for example for coloring surface coatings, printing inks or plastics.
