An apparatus for winding a web onto a roll has a pair of support rollers extending along respective substantially parallel horizontal axes and defining an upwardly open cradle holding the roll, a bottom plate extending axially underneath the rollers, and respective axially extending side plates extending upward from the bottom plate and engaging the rollers. The rollers, rolls, bottom plate, and side plates together form an axially extending and laterally closed space. A pair of axially spaced end plates lying in respective upright planes and closing ends of the space are each shaped to fit between the rollers and between the side plates and each can slide axially along the bottom and floor plates between an outer position spaced axially from the rollers and roll and an inner position between the rollers and engaging a respective axial end of the roll. The space between the end plates can be pressurized with air. A drive displaces the end plates between their positions.

In a winding machine, the space defined by the support cylinders and the winding rolls is sealed and an overpressure is created in this space to relieve the force with which the winding rolls press against the support cylinders. For the purpose, in the area of the two lateral ends of the support cylinders sealing elements are arranged, which for adjustment to various web widths, are axially displaceable and at the same time can be moved away to an area outside the motion range of guide heads and their mounting. In the sealing position of the sealing elements, a fictional-look connection with the support cylinders is avoided.

A method of winding a continuous web on a succession of cores comprises the steps of sequentially rotating a core to which the web is attached to longitudinally advance the web and wind it on the core while applying a strip of adhesive to a transfer roller and then stopping rotation of the core. Subsequently a crosswise row of perforations is formed in the web offset from the core and then the web is longitudinally advanced while pressing the roller against the web to transfer the adhesive strip to the web at and immediately upstream and downstream from the perforation row. The web is subsequently differentially. longitudinally advanced web upstream and downstream of the perforation row to tear the web longitudinally apart at the perforation row, thereby forming a trailing web end attached to the web wound on the core and a leading web end each carrying some of the adhesive strip. The trailing web end is then pressed against the web on the core to adhere it thereto and the core is replaced with a fresh core and then the leading web end is adhesively attached to the fresh core. At the end the web is again advanced the web and wound on the fresh core while applying another adhesive strip to the transfer roller.

A cradle-type winding machine has a pair of driven rollers receiving the sleeves on which the web is to be wound in a winding bed and a weakening device perforating the web upon temporary halting of the latter. A support can be raised into the winding bed and carries both a clamping roller and a swingable blade, the former being effective to clamp the web against one of the support rollers for the winding of heavy paper stack while the latter can be swung into a position enabling the tearing of light paper stack. When heavy paper stack is used, a perforator along the path of the web before it encounters the support rollers against which it is to lie is provided to perforate the web across its width and form a weakened zone on opposite sides of which adhesive strips are provided.

A drum-type winder for winding web of material, especially webs of paper or board, on cores, with a pressure-application roller that can be raised and lowered positioned above the drums and with a mechanism for separating the web and fastening the newly created initial web section to a new core. Components on each side of the frame travel up and down with both the pressure-application roller and the separating and fastening mechanism secured to them such that they can be shifted alternately into the area between the drums.

The apparatus for inserting a winding sleeve in a winding machine includes at least one supporting roll, at least two adjustable winder support pieces with spindles positioned opposite each other for receiving the winding sleeve and at least one sleeve gripper pivotable between a sleeve receiving position and a sleeve delivery position alignable axially with the spindles. The sleeve gripper can be mounted on a guide crosspiece above the supporting roll or alternatively pivotally and telescopably on a press roller mount or other crosspiece on one side of the supporting roll.

Apparatus for inserting a winding sleeve or core into a winding machine

A method of and device for winding webs of material, especially webs of paper or cardboard, on cores. In the method, the web is wound on cores in a bed created by two drums and the full reels are ejected from the bed above one drum by an arm that swings around the other. Wound reels with a short diameter are compressed between the ejection surface on the ejection arm and the drum that the reel is being ejected over and are lifted out of the bed by a rotation of the drum. The device has a mechanism for ejecting full reels that swings forward toward the bed created by two drums and has an ejection arm with an ejection surface that extends more or less radially toward the drum that the reel swings around. The ejection surface in one embodiment extends as far as the drum that the reel swings around and, once is has swung forward, its upper demarcation will extend into the vicinity of the adjacent drum. Another embodiment of the device also has a combination reel-ejection and core-insertion mechanism that has an ejection arm and a core-insertion structure, whereby the ejection surface on the arm terminates at a distance from the drum and the core-insertion structure releases the cores through the space between the ejection surface and the drum. The ejection surface can, when the ejection-and-insertion mechanism is at rest, be moved or extended toward the drum that the reel swings around.

Method and device for winding webs of material especially webs of paper

A method of and apparatus for the coiling of a web and positioning of a web-coiling core in the pocket of a double-roll coiling machine. The beam for removing the finished coil also carries the grippers for the core which is previously provided with glue to which the free end of the web severed from the finished coil can be adhered. A suction device maintains the orientation of the core after it is released by the grippers and as it moves from the transfer position to the coiling position.

A method of winding webs of cellulose on core tubes, wherein the web, which is subjected to tension, is separated by being wetted along a line across the direction in which the web travels at a point that ensures that the core tube will be completely looped. A two-drum winding machine with contact roll and web-separating mechanism for winding webs of cellulose is provided with a hollow separating strip that extends across the whole width of the machine and has water outlets along its blade.

In a shaftless machine for winding a web (4) on a roll (3), the machine having a pair of carrier rollers (1,2) of which at least one is driven, means (16) for introducing a roll into the gap between said carrier rollers, an assembly (5) comprising an ejection beam (6) and cutting (8) and fastening means (7), and means (9-14) for pivoting the assembly about the axis of one of the carrier rollers so as to eject a wound roll and, after a new roll (18) is introduced, to cut the web and to fasten it to the new roll, the improvement which comprises means (11-13) for displacing the assembly transverse to the axes of the carrier rollers thereby to adjust the position of the ejecting, cutting and fastening means so as to accommodate rolls of different diameters.

A method and an apparatus for the severing and reattachment of a web wherein the web is severed and the new head of the web so formed is attached to a core which is wound on two driven support rolls between which the web runs, includes the web being held to the circumference of one support roll by suction, severing the web downstream of the held portion when the web is in the held position condition, removing the finished roll, inserting a new core with a pressure roll and contact therewith and adhering the new head end of the web by previously applying an adhesive to either the head end of the web or the core and removing the suction as winding of the core is started.
