A device is disclosed for cleaning the discharge gap of a jet nozzle of a web coating line or the like. The cleaning device comprises a body member slidably mounted on or adjacent the jet nozzle in such a way as to be shiftable longitudinally of the jet nozzle between the ends thereof. A clean-out blade is mounted on the body member and has a free end extending into the jet nozzle discharge gap. Manually actuable or mechanical means are provided to shift the body member between the ends of the jet nozzle to cause the free end of the clean-out blade to clean the jet nozzle discharge gap.

The method of coating an elongated metallic member with a thermosetting plastic powder coating or with a thermosetting plastic powder undercoating and a thermoplastic powder outer coating, is significantly improved by passing the coated elongated metallic member through at least one induction coil to heat the metal and thereby the coating to the curing temperature of the thermosetting plastic powder and holding the temperature for the curing time. Curing temperatures, which depend upon the thermosetting plastic powder coating being cured, are sufficient to fully cure the material within seconds.

Method and means for continuously contact-coating one side only of a ferrous base metal strip with a molten coating metal. One or more roll means are provided to conduct the strip surface to be coated above the surface of a bath of the molten coating metal. The strip surface to be coated is caused to travel sufficiently close to the molten coating metal bath surface that the surface tension and wetting characteristics of the coating metal will permit the formation of a meniscus which will continuously contact and coat the strip surface. The coating is subjected to jet finishing. The strip is maintained in a protective non-oxidizing atmosphere at least until the one side thereof is coated. Alternatively, at least that side of the strip to be coated with the molten coating metal is coated with a flux which remains on the strip until contacted by the coating metal meniscus. The strip may be maintained in the protective non-oxidizing atmosphere until it is sufficiently cooled to prevent the formation of a visible oxide on the uncoated side thereof. When the strip is exposed to an oxidizing atmosphere after coating and while still sufficiently hot to form a visible oxide coating on the uncoated side thereof, the strip will thereafter be subjected to acid cleaning, rinsing and drying operations.

Method for continuously contact-coating one side only of a ferrous base

A method for finishing molten metallic coatings applied to iron and steel strip by the use of an elongate, laminar flow fluid jet, which jet is used to control thickness and quality of the finished coating. The narrow dimension of the fluid jet is contoured across the strip width to produce the desired coating weight at all parts of the strip and to produce a coated strip edge free from excessively heavy coatings and/or oxide 'berries.'

Apparatus for continuously contact-coating one side only of a ferrous

A power grid for a fluidized bed for electrostatically depositing a powdered plastic coating material from the bed onto an elongated metal substrate moving in a path of travel above the upper surface of the bed on a substantially horizontal pass line. The power grid includes two co-planar wire mesh elements positioned beneath the surface of the bed, the elements having opposed edges in parallel spaced relationship and defining a gap therebetween beneath the pass line. The edges are upturned to form a plurality of electrode segments, the tips of the electrode segments being substantially coincident with the upper surface of the bed when energized. In operation the electrode segments form a row of localized corona discharges to either side of the passing substrate to effect electrostatic deposition of a thin uniform film coating of the powdered material thereon.
