A backlight assembly includes a substantially planar light guide defining an upper, lower, and first side surface. A first plurality of LEDs is positioned to emit light into the lower surface. A NVIS filter is placed adjacent to, and a second plurality of LEDs is positioned near to, the first side surface. A directing element extends between the second plurality of LEDs and the NVIS filter and directs the emitted light from the second plurality of LEDs through the NVIS filter and into the light guide. The NVIS filter extends substantially perpendicular from a support structure associated with the light guide.

NVIS compatible backlight device and electronic display using the same

The exemplary embodiments herein provide a method for environmental adaptation of electronic display characteristics, comprising the steps of determining the sunset and sunrise times for the day and determining whether the present time is between sunrise and sunset or between sunset and sunrise. An exemplary method would then proceed by selecting a gamma for the display based on whether the present time is between sunrise and sunset or between sunset and sunrise, and driving the display at the selected gamma. The gamma can further be selected based on Artificial Ambient Light Sensor (AAS) data, which can be calculated during sunrise and sunset transition times.

Method for environmental adaptation of display characteristics based on location

The exemplary embodiments herein provide an electronic display with a display controller in electrical connection with the electronic display and adapted to direct the electronic display to operate per nighttime instructions if the present time is between sunrise and sunset, without accepting any input from an ambient light sensor, and direct the electronic display to operate per daytime instructions if the present time is between sunset and sunrise, without accepting any input from an ambient light sensor. The nighttime instructions may include a first setting for gamma while the daytime instructions may include a second setting for gamma. Sunrise and sunset transition periods can be calculated using Artificial Ambient Sensor Data (AAS), with further settings for gamma chosen based on the AAS data.

Electronic display with environmental adaptation of display characteristics based on location

The exemplary embodiments herein provide a lighting system for a display case having at least one edge. A lighting assembly is positioned along an edge of the display case or a door assembly, where a transparent or semi-transparent rod is positioned adjacent to the lighting assembly to act as a lens element. The rod is generally placed parallel to the edge of the display case or door assembly. The lighting assembly preferably includes a mounting structure which contains a substrate with a plurality of LEDs along with the rod. A blinder may extend rearwardly from the mounting structure to prevent headlighting.

Rod as a lens element for light emitting diodes

The exemplary embodiments herein provide an airguide backlight assembly having an anterior element, a reflective pan positioned posterior to the anterior element, and a light source positioned to direct light towards the reflective pan. A lens element may be placed in front of each light source. The reflective pan preferably contains a slope or curve so that light emitted from the light sources can be reflected and/or refracted to distribute the light uniformly to the anterior element. In some embodiments, blinders may be positioned between the light sources and the anterior element as well as between the light sources and the reflective pan.

Airguide backlight assembly

A backlight assembly includes a substantially planar light guide defining an upper surface, a lower surface, and a side surface. A first plurality of LEDs is positioned below the lower surface of the light guide and oriented to direct the light emitted therefrom into the lower surface. A NVIS filter is placed adjacent to the side surface and a second plurality of LEDs is positioned near the side surface. A separating element extends between the first and second plurality of LEDs. A directing element extends between the second plurality of LEDs and the NVIS filter to direct the emitted light from the second plurality of LEDs through the NVIS filter and into the light guide.

A system and method for altering the characteristics of a display based on environmental data is disclosed. Exemplary embodiments provide a light sensor, an environmental processing unit which is adapted to receive electrical signals from the light sensor and generate an environmentally-reactive control signal (S), an image signal processor which accepts Sand an encoded image signal (S) and generates a pre-decoding image signal (S), and an image signal decoder which accepts Sand generates a decoded image signal for the display. The environmentally-reactive control signal (S) may contain the instantaneous value of the desired display black level S. Alternatively or additionally, the environmentally-reactive control signal (S) may contain a signal linearity modification value.

System and method for environmental adaptation of display characteristics

A system and method for altering the characteristics of a display based on environmental data is disclosed. Exemplary embodiments provide a lighting system for a transparent LCD having opposing vertical edges, the system having a mullion lighting assembly positioned adjacent to each vertical edge of the transparent LCD, each mullion lighting assembly having sidewalls defining a center channel. A plurality of LEDs are positioned along the sidewall of each mullion assembly and on a side of the sidewall that opposes the center channel. The LEDs are preferably placed in conductive thermal communication with the sidewall and preferably have a quantum dot film positioned over each LED. A fan is preferably positioned to draw cooling air through the center channel.

Lighting system for transparent liquid crystal display

Preferred embodiments utilize a plurality of optical channels to effectively aim the light emitted by a liquid crystal display (LCD). Embodiments may also change the nominal and range of viewing angles of light in two or three dimensions in order to confine the emitted light towards the intended observer.

Channelized plate

Exemplary embodiments provide a lighting system for a transparent LCD having opposing vertical edges, the system having a mullion lighting assembly positioned adjacent to each vertical edge of the transparent LCD, each mullion lighting assembly having sidewalls defining a center channel. A plurality of LEDs are positioned along the sidewall of each mullion assembly and on a side of the sidewall that opposes the center channel. The LEDs are preferably placed in conductive thermal communication with the sidewall. A fan is positioned to draw cooling air through the center channel. A lens may be positioned adjacent to the LEDs to collimate the light. Louvers may be used to direct the emitted light away from the LCD, so as to reflect off the goods within a display case or the cavity within the display case. Some embodiments may use a flange to direct the emitted light away from the LCD.

The Stand-Off Fusion-terminated optical interface reduces optical reflections thereby increasing return losses that occur when an optical waveguide, including optical fibers, is interfaced to a bulk media of significantly differing refractive index. A small spacer material, or stand-off, is placed between the optical waveguide and the media. The stand-off is index-matched to the optical waveguide thereby eliminating reflections from this interface. The length of the stand-off is chosen so the reflections from the stand-off/media interface are weakly coupled back to the optical waveguide due to diffraction and attenuation losses within the stand-off. The optical waveguide is then fused to the stand-off by focusing a time variable laser beam at the junction of the optical waveguide and the stand-off.

Stand-off fusion-terminated optical waveguide interface

An electronically agile multi-beam optical transceiver has a first crossbar switch, that switches input signals to selected ones of a spatial array of light emitters. The light emitters supply modulated light beams to spatial locations of a telecentric lens, which geometrically transforms the beams along different divergence paths, in accordance with displacements from the lens axis of the light emitter elements within the spatial array. Light beams from remote sites incident on a divergence face of the telecentric lens are deflected to a photodetector array, outputs of which are coupled to a second crossbar switch. An auxiliary photodetector array monitors optical beams from one or more sites whose spatial locations are known, and supplies spatial error correction signals for real-time pointing and tracking and atmospheric correction.
