An improved tow and method of making comprising a mixture of thermoplastic microfibers having an average diameter in the range of up to about 10 microns and being discontinuous but with a very high length to diameter ratio. The mixture is formed by physically entangling microfibers containing 10% to 90% of shorter fibers with the microfibers being predominantly aligned parallel to the axis of the tow and the mixture being bonded at contact points between microfibers and the shorter fibers. The method includes the steps of forming a melt with thermoplastic material and extruding it through one or more series of orifices arranged in a rounded configuration. The extruded melt is contacted with a first gas stream whereby a network of physically entangled microfibers is formed. A second gas stream is formed and the shorter fibers entrained therein are merged to form a mixture with the microfibers. The mixture is collected as a tow or tube of rounded cross section with the microfibers being predominantly aligned parallel to the axis of the tow. Variations include the use of different and combinations of short fibers and microfibers as well as varying the concentration of such fibers throughout the cross section of the tow or tube. Uses for such tows or tubes include beauty coils, tampons, cigarette filters, bottle stuffers, and, with additives, other products such as insulating caulking and the like.

Mixed fiber tow or tube and method of making

A nonwoven fabric having oil and grease absorbency properties but also having the capability to release at least about 60 percent of such oil or grease in accordance with the grease release test described. Such webs include a matrix of microfibers and may include up to about 75 percent of other fibers such as staple or wood pulp. The web is treated with one or more compositions selected from carboxymethyl cellulose and derivatives, vinyl carboxypolymers, hydroxy ethyl ether starch derivatives, and acrylics. The treatment permits the web to retain its fibrous structure while at least partially coating said fibers to reduce the oleophilic nature of the web. Examples of useful fibers include polyolefins, especially polypropylene, polyesters, and polyamides. The web is preferably bonded by a patterned application of fuse bonds covering up to about 14 percent of surface area and in a frequency of up to about 15 bonds per square inch. The result is a web particularly useful as a wiper for food service application where it aggressively absorbs and retains oily and greasy materials and yet when rinsed and wrung out releases a high proportion of such oils and greases so that upon reuse streaking is minimized. The preferred embodiment is a matrix including 25 percent polypropylene microfibers and 75 percent of a mixture of polyester and cotton staple bonded with a continuous cross-hatch pattern covering 14 percent of the surface area and 4 lines per inch and treated with up to 2 percent of a crosslinked polycarboxylic resin and polyethylene glycol in the finished fabric.

Oil and grease absorbent rinsable nonwoven fabric

Nonwoven wiper having improved absorbency characteristics and streak free wiping properties having a laminate construction including a relatively high basis weight middle layer of meltblown thermoplastic microfibers and, on either side, a lightweight layer of generally continuous filament thermoplastic fibers having a larger average diameter. These wipers are strong, fabric-like, and are useful for a wide variety of applications including industrial uses, food services, as well as many others. The continuous filament layers provide strength and low lint properties while the combination exhibits improved wiping characteristics. The laminate is preferably bonded by application of heat and pressure and the individual components are preferably treated with a surfactant. The preferred combination of a layer of meltblown polypropylene microfibers having on either side a spunbonded polypropylene filament layer is particularly effective as an all purpose wiper.

Nonwoven wiper laminate

Wiper comprising a matrix of nonwoven fibers having a basis weight generally in the range of from about 25 to 300 gsm and including a meltblown web having incorporated therein a staple fiber mixture including synthetic and cotton fibers. The combination provides highly improved wiping properties as well as strength and absorbency for many industrial applications requiring wiping of oily and/or aqueous materials. The wipers may be formed by a conventional meltblowing process involving extrusion of a thermoplastic polymer as filaments into airstreams which draw and attenuate the filaments into fine fibers having an average diameter of up to about 10 microns. The staple fiber mixture of synthetic and cotton fibers may be added to the airstream, and the turbulence produced where the airstreams meet results in uniform integration of the staple fiber mixture into the meltblown web. The matrix may contain up to 90% by weight of the synthetic and cotton fiber blend, which, itself, may contain up to about 90% by weight of the synthetic fibers.

Nonwoven wiper

Tissue dispensing system for dispensing a stack of interleaved facial tissues from a wall mounted type dispensing cabinet employs a plastic overwrap package of facial tissues having a perforated opening which automatically adheres a front face of the package to a slot in the cabinet to provide inproved tissue dispensing. As each tissue is dispensed, tensile forces are applied to the front face of the package along defined lines by the edges of the tissue passing past the corners of the opening in the package causing the front face of the package to bend into a truncated, hip-roof shaped structure having the truncated end depending from the slot in the cabinet. The tensile forces on the front face cause compressive forces to be applied about a perimeter region situated between the outer extremes of the front face and the outer extremes of a back face of the package in a sense opposing movement of the stack of tissues away from the back face of the package as the stack of tissue diminishes and in a manner preventing collapse of the plastic package during dispensing of the tissues.
