A hollow tubular element is inserted in the descending aorta. The caudad end contains a pressure sensitive passive or preferably, hydraulically or electrically activated, unidirectional valve. A flexible diaphragm situated in a rigid shell affixed over an opening in the element wall divides the shell interior into first and second variable volume chambers. The first chamber opens to the artery. A continuously operating electrical pump is connected to the second chamber through a closed hydraulic system including a multi-valve chamber. The valves regulate fluid flow to the second chamber in accordance with electrical signals from the heart. Fluid flow is directed to the second chamber during cardiac diastole and away from the second chamber during cardiac systole, causing the device to function in a counterpulsation mode. The work of the heart is decreased and coronary blood flow is increased to promote the formation of new coronary collateral channels and the perfusion of the heart itself. In the event of mechanical failure, pre-implantation heart function is not impeded.

Implantable counterpulsation cardiac assist device

The invention provides a treatment for congestive heart failure (CHF) in a patient. At least one pressure applicator is arranged externally around a body segment of the patient. Negative pressure, relative to atmospheric pressure, is applied to the body segment of the patient during cardiac systole using the pressure applicator, thereby reducing ventricular afterload in the patient. The negative pressure to the body segment of the patient is removed during cardiac diastole.

A method and system for treating a patient having an acute myocardial infarction. Such system may comprise at least one tank having a pressurized gas contained therein, at least one housing having a shell and being adapted to at least partially surround a body segment of the patient, a hose/valve device for supplying the compressed gas from the tank to the housing; and a control device for controlling the flow of compressed gas from the tank to the housing in accordance with cardiac systole and cardiac diastolic of the patient to vary the pressure in synchronization with the patient's heart function. The system may be arranged within a moving vehicle, such as an ambulance, an airplane, or a ship.

External counterpulsation (ECP) device for use in an ambulance or the like for heart attack patients to limit heart muscle damage

The effect of the action of collagenase in treating lesions containing collagen or mixed fibrin clots (e.g., burns or ulcers) is improved by applying collagenase to the wound in combination with an organogel and a phosphatidylcholine, of which lecithin is a readily available source, particularly when the collagenase is first mixed and stored with that choline and an organic solvent and is subsequently mixed with a second individually stored formulation comprising a gel-forming agent and water, the two formulations individually having satisfactory shelf lives and the resultant mixture being applied to the lesion promptly after being formed.

A patient support for an external counterpulsation cardiac assist procedure. The patient support includes: a base; and at least one support connected to the base for maintaining at least a portion of the patient above a tabletop during a positive pressure portion of the external counterpulsation cardiac assist procedure. In one embodiment, the base is a tabletop and the at least one support is movably supported on the table top in lateral and/or vertical directions. In another embodiment, the base is higher than the tabletop and the at least one support is a sling.

Patient support for external counterpulsation cardiac assist device

The cardiac assist device includes a sealed tubular housing for externally applying positive and negative relative pressure to a limb in counterpulsation with heart function. The applicator is assembled, in situ, to provide customized fit. It includes a fabric or sponge-like inner layer cut to size and situated around the limb. Initially deformable material is sized, sealed around the inner fabric layer and then secured by straps or the like to form a relatively rigid, non-expandable tubular shell. The shell may include an interior wall composed of a sheet of hard plastic or articulated sections of hard plastic or metal. The interior wall has a plurality of openings to the sealed shell interior. The exterior shell wall is positioned around the interior wall. The shell walls are spaced apart by radially and/or longitudinally extending spacer elements defining a multi-section air flow chamber between the walls. The interior shell wall and spacer elements may be integral. The spacer elements include passages such that air pumped into and out of the shell chamber is uniformly distributed and moves freely to and from the shell interior. A heater may be used to regulate the air temperature to promote vascular dilation.

External counterpulsation cardiac assist device

An applicator for applying an external counterpulsation to a body portion is provided. The applicator including: an outer shell for covering the body portion, the outer shell having a length in a longitudinal direction and a circumference in a circumferential direction; a balloon disposed in the outer shell, pressurization of which applies an external pressure to the body portion; and at least one anti-deformation member for reducing an amount of deformation of the outer shell caused by the pressurization of the balloon.

The handle has a blade mounting portion with a raised boss forming a slot. The blade has a boss receiving recess with a portion defined by an edge. The cartridge removeably retains the blade. It has an opening into which the blade mounting portion of the handle can be inserted. A normally arcuate spring is mounted in cantilever fashion within the enclosure. The tip of the blade abuts a stop surface proximate the unattached end of the spring. In its arcuate state, the spring retains the blade in a position where the edge of the blade can enter the slot in the handle. As the blade is moved by insertion of the handle, against the urging of the spring, the spring straightens allowing the blade to assume a position where the boss can be fully seated within the recess, mounting the blade on the handle. The blade is then removed from the cartridge by withdrawing the handle. After use, the blade is reinserted into the cartridge. A pushbutton, accessible from the exterior of the cartridge, is depressed to cause the boss to withdraw from the slot to dismount the blade from the handle. A stand for retaining multiple cartridges is provided. Each cartridge is supported by a rigid finger aligned with the pushbotton. Applying a downward force on the cartridge causes the pushbutton to depress to dismount the blade.
