An amenity accessing system is provided that includes an access telephone () with a plurality of access keys. The telephone includes a line powered card reader () that interfaces with a CPU (). Information stored in a memory () can then be output in response to a good card received by the card reader (), this information being in the form of a calling string. The calling string is output to a switched network () and a store-and-forward switch (). The store-and-forward switch () is operable to receive the calling string containing information as to the user's ID, credit card information, location of the access phone () and other relevant data. This billing information is validated at the store-and-forward switch () and, upon validation, an authorization code is then transmitted through a switched network () to one of various amenities ()-(). Billing information is then stored at the store-and-forward switch () and transmitted to various outclearing services through a storage media ().

System for accessing amenities through a public telephone network

Method and apparatus for providing customers of hospitality facilities with the ability to access a variety of amenities and to interact with a video system in order to enable point-of-sale purchase of and payment for goods and services with a credit or debit card. In a preferred embodiment, the video services system comprises a plurality of card readers arranged in a distributed configuration, each of which are associated with a room terminal of a video services system. In a preferred embodiment, each the card readers may be powered using power provided by an associated TV and room terminal. Each room terminal functions as an interface between the systems control computer and the card reader associated with the room terminal. When the room terminal is in communication with the systems control computer, by having been polled or by initiating a transmission, billing data previously entered by a customer using the card reader is transmitted to the systems control computer, which processes the billing data, and, based on the content and format thereof, accesses one or more data bases or card validation bureaus to which it is connected. Based on preprogrammed parameters and on information resulting from queries made to data bases, the systems control computer interacts with the customer by generating and transmitting graphics (or display) prompts or audio or visual prompts using the or by providing entertainment and information services.

An interactive video services system for enabling store and forward distribution of digitized video programming is disclosed. In accordance with a feature of the present invention, encoded and compressed digital video signals are transmitted via satellite link from a centrally located uplink site to a plurality of hospitality establishments, where the digitized video programming is stored in the memory of a video server computer or is transmitted 'real-time' to the hospitality establishment's customers. The establishment either has its own downlink facilities or shares downlink facilities with other hospitality establishments. The uplink facility and satellite can transmit a variety of video signals--including video signals for real-time viewing by customers, compressed video signals for storage and subsequent retrieval and viewing by customers, and other types of digitized data, such as advertisements and barker screens. Various signal types, including operating system updates and digitized menus and advertisement graphics for the video programming, are separated and appropriately processed and routed at the hospitality facility.
