A cathode ray tube having an evacuated envelope including a substantially rectangular faceplate panel with a sidewall joined to a funnel and an implosion resistant band surrounding at least a portion of the sidewall and in contact therewith. The cathode ray tube is mounted in a cabinet by a plurality of mounting lugs. The mounting lugs having a base portion attached to the implosion resistant band, an adjoining portion substantially perpendicular to the base portion, and a mounting portion positioned at an angle in respect to the adjoining portion. The mounting portion having an aperture for receiving a fastner for coupling the mounting portion to the cabinet.

The present invention provides an implosion prevention tension band for use in a cathode ray tube (CRT) . The CRT includes a faceplate panel with a substantially flat viewing faceplate and a peripheral rearwardly extending sidewall having an inside blend radius from the viewing faceplate to the sidewall . The tension band is a single layer band surrounding the panel and having a predetermined width extending rearwardly from near the faceplate to at least half the distance between the rear edge of the inside blend radius and the rear edge of the sidewall . According to another aspect of the present invention, the tension band includes a plurality of tension adjusting features being positioned at locations around the band aft of the inside blend radius in such manner that the stresses in predetermined areas of the panel are reduced.

The present invention provides an improvement in the mounting of a cathode-ray tube within a bezel. The cathode-ray tube includes a unitary shellbond frame having integral mounting lugs which are positioned at locations either in the corners or off of the corners. The mounting lugs are formed with tapered sections along a depth dimension to allow a tube having the shellbond frame applied to be simply lowered into a bezel having lug receiving recesses of a complimentary shape. The tapered lug and complimentary lug receiving recess provides self-alignment of the tube before it is secured to the bezel.

The present invention relates to an implosion prevention band for a CRT comprising an evacuated envelope having a mask and corresponding faceplate panel with sidewalls joined to a funnel. The faceplate panel and sidewalls form external corner surfaces and a peripheral inside blend radius. An implosion prevention band surrounds and closely hugs at least an edge of the external corner surfaces of the faceplate panel. The band extends along the exterior surface of the sidewall such that the width of the band is at or near the inside blend radius of the faceplate panel. The band is under tension to produce radially inwardly directed force components through the corners of the faceplate panel and primarily near the blend radius to produce a high degree of implosion protection for the CRT.

A display apparatus comprises at least one speaker and a cathode-ray tube (CRT) secured within an enclosure to a plurality of mounting bosses . The cathode-ray tube has an evacuated envelope with a substantially rectangular-shaped faceplate panel having four corners and a viewing portion extending to a peripheral sidewall . The viewing portion has a luminescent line screen on the interior surface thereof The viewing portion including two orthogonal axes, a major axis, X, parallel to a longer dimension of the viewing portion and a minor axis, Y, parallel to a smaller dimension of the viewing portion. At least four mounting lugs , each having a base portion and an attachment portion , with a mounting aperture , therethrough, cooperate with the implosion protection band 44 to facilitate securing the CRT within the enclosure . The attachment portion , of each of the mounting lugs , is aligned along the central longitudinal axis, Z, of the CRT and parallel to at least one of the two orthogonal axes, X, Y, to strengthen the attachment portion and reduce microphonics induced by the speaker

A shrinkfit implosion protection band surrounds at least a portion of the sidewall and is in contact therewith. The envelope further includes a funnel and a neck portion. The funnel is joined to the panel. An electron gun, for generating and directing at least one electron beam toward the screen, is located in the neck portion. A shrinkfit implosion protection band is fitted on the periphery of the panel to apply a compressive force thereto as a result of the tension of the band. The band includes a double thickness of material, a section of which extends forward of the mold-match line. The band is improved over prior bands by adjusting the effective sectional area of the double thickness portion to a value appropriate to provide deformation compensation to the faceplate panel, thereby maintaining register of the electron beam on the screen.

A cathode-ray tube comprises an evacuated envelope which includes a faceplate panel joined to a funnel. A shrinkfit implosion protection band of at least one strip of metal, having oppositely disposed ends, is secured together at a connective joint to form a loop with cold dimensions slightly smaller than the periphery of the panel prior to application of the band. The band has a given sectional area with at least one opening formed therethrough. The band is fitted around the periphery of the panel to apply a compressive force thereto, as a result of the tension of the band. The band is improved by providing at least one slot within the band and in communication with the opening, to reduce the sectional area of the band sufficiently to lower the tension of the band below the minimum design limit of the connective joint.

A color CRT assembly comprises a tube having an external magnetic deflection yoke thereon. The tube includes an evacuated envelope with a substantially rectangular faceplate panel and a tubular neck connected by a funnel having a rectangular open end sealed to the faceplate panel. A three color phosphor screen is carried on an inner surface of the faceplate panel and a color selection electrode is mounted in spaced relation therefrom. An electronic gun is disposed within the neck of the tube for generating and directing at least one electron beam to the screen. The band has at least one mounting lug comprising a base portion and an attachment portion cooperating therewith. The method includes the steps of expanding the dimensions of the band to form at least one outwardly directed concavity therein to accommodate the base portion of the mounting lug to prevent the lateral displacement thereof, attaching the mounting lug to the band and affixing the band to the CRT to compressively force the band and the base portion of the lug against the CRT.
