An article includes a cold-shrinkable protective housing configured to be mounted on a terminated cable. The protective housing includes a housing body and an integral, tubular, electrically insulating rejacketing sleeve. The housing body includes a tubular cable leg, a tubular connector leg extending transversely to the cable leg, and a housing insulation layer formed of an electrically insulating elastomer. The rejacketing sleeve surrounds a portion of the cable leg. The connector leg defines a connector bore. The cable leg defines a cable entrance opening at a proximal end and a cable receiving bore extending from the cable entrance opening to the connector bore at a distal end. The cable receiving bore extends transversely to the connector bore. The rejacketing sleeve includes an extension section configured to extend or be extended in a proximal direction beyond the proximal end of the cable leg to surround a jacket of the cable.

A surge arrester includes a polymer body including a first leg having a first channel defined therein and a second leg perpendicular to the first leg and having a second channel defined therein. A varistor assembly is in the first channel. The varistor assembly includes a plurality of varistor elements electrically connected in series and forming a stack of the plurality of varistor elements. The stack has a first end surface, a second end surface, and an outer side surface extending between the first end surface and the second end surface. The varistor assembly includes a first end fitting at the first end surface of the stack, a second end fitting at the second end surface of the stack, a plurality of rods disposed around the side surface of the stack, and a polymer fill layer between the side surface of the stack and the first leg of the body.

A connector terminating an end of an electrical cable includes an outer surface, and a radio frequency (RF) sensor tag is secured to the connector outer surface and includes a temperature sensor and an antenna. In response to the RF sensor tag receiving an interrogation signal from a remote RF reader, the temperature sensor is configured to detect a temperature of the connector and generate a temperature data signal, and the antenna is configured to transmit the temperature data signal to the remote RF reader.

Apparatus and methods for monitoring the temperature of high voltage electrical cable connectors

The present disclosure describes an electrical cable accessory system for covering an electrical cable and/or cable connection. The electrical cable accessory system includes a pre-expanded cable accessory unit and a time-temperature indicator associated with the pre-expanded cable accessory unit. The pre-expanded cable accessory unit includes a pre-expanded cable accessory formed of an elastomeric material and a removable holdout mounted within the elastomeric cable accessory, wherein the holdout is operative to maintain the elastomeric cable accessory in an expanded state and to permit the elastomeric cable accessory to elastically contract when the holdout is removed from the elastomeric cable accessory. The time-temperature indicator is configured to undergo a visible change in appearance in response to a cumulative heat exposure and signal to a viewer when the elastomeric material of the pre-expanded elastomeric cable accessory unit has experienced a threshold cumulative heat exposure. Methods including the same are also described herein.
