A method for removing contaminants from a gas stream including contacting a gas stream comprising hydrocarbons and sulfur contaminants with a modified nanocomposite adsorbent. Also provided are compositions and processes for forming compositions of a modified nanocomposite adsorbent composition for removing sulfur contaminants from a hydrocarbon stream. Additionally, provided is system for removing sulfur impurities from a gaseous hydrocarbon stream, where the system includes a plurality of adsorbent vessels arranged in series, where the adsorbent vessels include an emulsion of a modified nanocomposite adsorbent composition.

Robust and sustainable chemical treatment for sulfur contaminants in feed natural gas

Barite (barium sulfate) scale may be problematic in subterranean formations, wellbores, pipelines, and other locations and may be difficult to remove in many instances. Aqueous fluid compositions effective for removing barite scale may comprise a concentrated mineral acid, a first salt comprising an iodide anion, and a second salt comprising an anion that forms an aqueous-soluble barium salt. One suitable aqueous fluid composition may comprise concentrated hydroiodic acid, an alkali metal iodide, and an alkali metal hypophosphite salt. The aqueous fluid compositions may be used in combination with a second treatment phase comprising a fluid composition comprising at least one acid gas capturing agent. The at least one acid gas capturing agent may comprise a first component reactive toward hydrogen sulfide and an optional second component reactive toward carbon dioxide.

Compositions, systems, and methods for iron sulfide scale identification, prevention, and reduction

Quantifying an amount of sulfur in a petroleum sample includes sequential extraction and quantification of inorganic and organic sulfur species. An exemplary process includes extracting inorganic sulfur components from the sample to yield extracted inorganic sulfur components and a residual sample, and reducing the sulfur in the extracted inorganic sulfur components to yield a first quantity of hydrogen sulfide. The organic sulfur components are extracted from the residual sample to yield extracted organic sulfur components, and the sulfur in the extracted organic sulfur components is reduced to yield a second quantity of hydrogen sulfide. The amount of sulfur in the first quantity of hydrogen sulfide and the amount of sulfur in the second quantity of hydrogen sulfide are combined to yield a total amount of sulfur in the sample.

An aqueous iron sulfide dissolver including zinc, chromium, a methoxybenzoic acid, formic acid, acetic acid, and hydrochloric acid. The iron sulfide dissolver is made by combining these components, and dissolves compounds including iron sulfide upon contact. Evolved hydrogen sulfide reacts with the methoxybenzoic acid to yield solubilized methanethiol as an intermediate product, which is further oxidized to yield dissolved dimethyl disulfide.
