Integrated antenna structures described herein include, as one example, a multi-layered printed circuit board (PCB), including an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) cell that includes a backing metal layer defining a first inner layer of the multi-layered PCB and an AMC metal layer defining a second inner layer of the multi-layered PCB. The metal layer defining the second inner layer is separated from at least one edge of the multi-layered PCB, and a planar inverted F antenna (PIFA) surrounds the AMC cell. The AMC metal layer is configured to reflect energy radiated by the PIFA. In some embodiments, the energy radiated by the PIFA includes radio frequency waves that can be used by a receiver to power or charge an electronic device.

Antenna structures having planar inverted F-antenna that surrounds an artificial magnetic conductor cell

A plurality of integrated antenna structures described herein may be formed in a flat panel antenna arrays which may be arranged in equally spaced grid and may be used in transmitters for sending focused RF waves towards a receiver for wireless power charging or powering. Each of the integrated antenna structures may include planar inverted-F antennas (PIFAs) integrated with artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) metamaterials. As a result of their high directionality and form factor, the integrated antenna structures may be placed very close together, thus enabling the integration of a high number of integrated antenna structures in a single flat panel antenna array which may fit about 400+ integrated antenna structures. Each integrated antenna structure in the flat panel antenna arrays may be operated independently, thus enabling an enhanced control over the pocket forming. In addition, the higher number of integrated antenna structures may contribute to a higher gain for the flat panel antenna arrays.

Integrated antenna structure arrays for wireless power transmission

Various planar inverted-F antenna configurations may include an antenna element formed on the top of a PCB and a ground element formed on the bottom of the PCB. Two or more slots may be included in the antenna element for reducing the antenna area while maintaining a suitable impedance bandwidth. A slot may be included in the ground element for reducing the ground area while increasing radiation efficiency. A folded ground may be formed on the top of the PCB for reducing system area while maintaining suitable performance. By moving the folded ground closer to the antenna element and increasing the PCB thickness, significant reductions in system area may be achieved, while maintaining or improving performance in terms of radiation pattern, radiation efficiency and impedance bandwidth.

Compact PIFA antenna

A radiating metamaterial antenna including at least two metamaterial unit cells formed from a metamaterial layer. Each metamaterial unit cell includes: (i) a first metal portion disposed on the metamaterial layer, the first metal portion including an interior perimeter that surrounds an aperture defined by the first metal portion, and (ii) a second metal portion disposed within the aperture, wherein a perimeter of the second metal portion has a separation from the interior perimeter of the first metal portion. The radiating metamaterial antenna further includes a feed that is configured to excite one or more of the at least two metamaterial unit cells with an electromagnetic signal to cause the at least two metamaterial unit cells to radiate electromagnetic energy.

Integrated antenna arrays for wireless power transmission

Integrated antenna structures described herein may include planar inverted-F antennas (PIFAs) integrated with artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) metamaterials. The integrated metamaterial operatively coupled with the PIFA may function as an artificial magnetic reflector, sending all the energy radiated upwards, and thereby changing the original omnidirectional radiation pattern of the PIFA to a directional radiation pattern. The integrated antenna structures that include PIFAs and metamaterials may maintain a smaller form factor as compared to similar directional antennas, while exhibiting a suitable performance in terms of radiation efficiency, radiation pattern and impedance bandwidth.

Integrated miniature PIFA with artificial magnetic conductor metamaterials

A metamaterial system of a wireless transmission apparatus comprises a metamaterial layer. The metamaterial layer comprises an array of unit cells wherein each of the unit cell comprises a surface having a metal patch with an aperture. The aperture is defined such that a periphery of the aperture is within a periphery of the surface by a spacing distance and an element is disposed within the aperture. The metamaterial system further comprises at least one input RF port placed on a backing layer disposed below the metamaterial layer such that there is no short-circuit between the conductive backing layer and the metamaterial layer; and at least one set of vias connecting the array of unit cells with the at least one input RF port.
