In one aspect of an inventive concept, a product includes a substrate and a material formed from a precursor powder, where the material includes a plurality of particles from the precursor powder deposited on the substrate. The plurality of particles have structural characteristics defined by an impact of the particles on the substrate and/or on previously deposited particles. Moreover, the material has a microstructure, where the microstructure of the material is substantially the same as a microstructure of the precursor powder. The microstructure of the material is characterized by at least one property, where the at least one property is substantially the same as a corresponding at least one property of the precursor powder.

Cold spray of brittle materials

A product includes an array of cold spray-formed structures. Each of the structures is characterized by having a defined feature size in at least one dimension of less than 100 microns as measured in a plane of deposition of the structure, at least 90% of a theoretical density of a raw material from which the structure is formed, and essentially the same functional properties as the raw material. Products and applications for the templated fabrication of materials using cold spray deposition

A system is disclosed for harvesting at least one of mechanical or thermal energy. The system may have a flexible substrate, a plurality of electrically conductive nanowires secured to the substrate, and a plurality of electrically conductive metal layers. The metal layers may be disposed on the substrate and spaced apart from one another along a length of the substrate. The metal layers may be in electrically conductive contact with various ones of the nanowires. At least two of the metal layers may be attachable to an external device. At least one of movement or flexing of the substrate produces an output voltage across the metal layers.

Harvesting mechanical and thermal energy by combining nanowires and phase change materials

A system for high sensitivity, high time resolution detection of an arbitrary spontaneous emission is disclosed. The system may use a local oscillator (LO) for generating an LO input optical signal, and an linear optical mixer for receiving and mixing the input optical signal and an arbitrary spontaneous emission. The 2D detector generates a first component output and a second component. A subsystem receives the component outputs and produces first and second dispersed spectrum output signals. At least a first ultra-high speed camera is used for imaging one of the first or second dispersed spectrum output signals.

System and method for high sensitivity spectrometer with high time resolution

A novel energy harvesting system and method utilizing a thermoelectric having a material exhibiting a large thermally induced strain (TIS) due to a phase transformation and a material exhibiting a stress induced electric field is introduced. A material that exhibits such a phase transformation exhibits a large increase in the coefficient of thermal expansion over an incremental temperature range (typically several degrees Kelvin). When such a material is arranged in a geometric configuration, such as, for a example, a laminate with a material that exhibits a stress induced electric field (e.g. a piezoelectric material) the thermally induced strain is converted to an electric field.
