A direct-positive image-forming photographic material comprises a supporting substrate bearing a light sensitive, nonprefogged silver halide photographic emulsion capable of forming an internal latent image and includes a water-insoluble nucleator. The nucleator is incorporated in the photographic material in the form of a solid particle dispersion to improve the storage stability of the photographic material. The development rate of the photographic material may be increased by use of a developer containing an activator for the nucleator.

A method of processing a photographic element having a layer comprising a silver halide emulsion sensitized with a cyanine dye where the dye is present in the processing solution at a concentration sufficient to cause formation of solid dye particles. The method comprises contacting the element with at least one processing solution in the presence of an effective amount of a dye solubilizing compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 are each independently selected from the group consisting of ##STR2## halogen, hydrogen, hydroxy, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, substituted or unsubstituted alkoxy, and sulfo,

Photographic process

A black and white direct positive photographic element intended for the formation of a viewable silver image is disclosed. One or more silver halide emulsion layers are present containing internal latent image forming silver halide grains. A maximum density enhancing antifoggant is located in an undercoat between the emulsion layer or layers and the support to impart an increase in photographic speed, an extended overexposure margin before encountering rereversal, a decrease in minimum density, and an increase in the covering power of developed silver.

Direct positive photographic elements with incorporated maximum density

Photographic elements particularly adapted for forming direct-positive images are disclosed in which a radiation-sensitive core-shell emulsion layer and a silver halide emulsion layer incapable of forming a surface latent image within the direct-positive exposure latitude of the first emulsion layer and containing a grain population capable of internally trapping photolytically generated electrons are both present. The photographic elements are capable of exhibiting increased covering power, greater maximum density, and increased speed.

Photographic elements containing direct-positive emulsions and processes

A radiation-sensitive emulsion for use in forming a direct-positive image is disclosed. The emulsion is comprised of core-shell silver halide grains. The shell portions of the grains contain polyvalent metal ions to reduce rereversal.
