The following specification describes a panelboard assembly comprising a plurality of modular insulators having spaced integrally formed resilient mounting rails for supporting a circuit breaker housing above the panelboard bus bars. Each circuit breaker is connected to a bar carrying current of one phase and on tripping may generate ionized arc gases that exit the arc chute passage and engage a bus bar carrying current of another phase. A thermoplastic insulating material is interposed in the path between the arc chute passage and a bus bar carrying current of another phase. A bend is also introduced in the bus bars intermediate their ends to force an insulating member interposed between the bus bars and a cabinet wall against the cabinet wall.

Insulator mounting for panelboard

A spring steel spring interlocked with a panelboard assembly door by a pull having a leg projecting through the door to engage a passage edge in the spring. When the pull is rotated to open the door the leg moves the spring to disengage a latch adjacent one end of the spring from behind a detent in a frame latch passage. The detent in the frame passage engages the latch to hold the door from rapid opening, if a circuit breaker trips to generate arc gases which exert pressure against the door, but permits separation of the door from the frame and flexure of the door to vent arc gases.

Panelboard vent assembly

A retainer plate is pivotally mounted on a panelboard cabinet door lock housing, which carries a latch for locking the door. A detent on the plate engages in a rabbet opening to enable limited opening movement of the door in response to the pressure developed by arc gases generated by fault currents passing through a tripped circuit breaker in the panelboard cabinet. For ordinary opening movement, the lock latch is manually operated to pivot the retainer plate and disengage the detent from the rabbet opening.

The following specification describes a panelboard assembly comprising a plurality of modular insulators each having an integrally formed resilient bead for engaging a circuit breaker housing recess to support a circuit breaker. A tongue on each insulator assists in disengaging the circuit breaker from the bead. Longitudinally extending bus bars are supported by the insulators in heat transmitting relationship to the metal wall of an enclosure. The insulators have long surface paths between adjacent bus bars and bus stabs to prevent electrical leakage. A neutral assembly in close space saving relationship to the bus bars and for convenient wiring is provided together with partition walls between phase bus bars and between individual bus stabs.

Panelboard assembly

The following specification describes a circuit breaker enclosure having a cover, which is latched closed by spring biased latch handles. The handles and cover move in response to gas pressure for relieving the pressure generated on tripping of the circuit breaker. The latch handles are arranged to point outwardly of the enclosure, when open, to provide a clear visual indication of their being open. The circuit breaker handle and enclosure handle are directly engaged with a common pivot pin for synchronous movement to enable the enclosure handle to indicate the trip condition of the breaker. When the cover is open, the handles are interlocked against movement to an ON position by a biased pivotable interlock plate. The cover in turn is latched closed through the interlock plate and a breaker handle plate, when the circuit breaker enclosure handles are in the ON position. A pair of spaced edge projections on the enclosure wall engage the cover sealing gasket to avoid a permanent compression set in the gasket.

A terminal connector or lug for use as a termination for electrical cables is formed by an impacting process. The connector comprises an apertured mounting pad portion and an integral cylindrical tubular body portion having an open end and a closed end and adapted to be crimped onto an electrical cable. The pad is of a generally rectangular parallelepiped shape and extends longitudinally outwardly from the closed end of the tubular portion adjacent an outer peripheral region thereof. Opposite side portions of the inner end portion of the pad extend inwardly of the closed end of the tubular portion, and the wall closing the closed end of the tubular portion is of uniform thickness and is perpendicular to an upper surface of the pad. The region of intersection of the tubular portion and the pad provides a transitional section permitting the connector to be as short as possible and minimizing metal waste while presenting a current transfer area of adequate cross section so that the current carrying capacity throughout the length of the connector is sufficiently uniform to prevent any hot spots.
