A telecommunications system has a protocol architecture over an interface between nodes of the telecommunications system, the protocol architecture including Internet Protocol as a protocol above a link layer protocol in a transport network layer. The protocol architecture can be used over one or more of several interfaces, including the interface between a radio access network and a core network [Iu Interface]; the interface between radio network controllers (RNCs) and the base stations (BSs) served thereby [Iub Interface]; and the interface between a Source RNC (SRNC) and a Drift RNC (DRNC) [Iur Interface]. A new XTP Protocol is proposed as another aspect of the invention, which is usable in a protocol stack for the Iu-PS (packet switched) implementation as well as over the Iu-CS, Iub, and Iur Interfaces.

Using internet protocol (IP) in radio access network

A method of alerting a mobile wireless subscriber () registered with a mobile wireless communication network () to a session initiation request sent by a calling party (). The method comprises receiving a SIP Invite message at a Home SIP server () of the mobile network (), the SIP Invite message containing a SIP URL identifying said mobile subscriber (). Using the SIP URL, the identity of a ACP () with which the mobile subscriber () is currently registered is identified and a paging message broadcast to said mobile subscriber () from said ACP ().

IP communication in a cellular telecommunications system

A method of authorizing an Internet Protocol (IP) enabled mobile host to access the Internet via an wireless LAN, GSM, UMTS access network comprises initially sending an IP access request from the mobile host to an IP router within the access network . In response to receipt of said access request at the IP router , an IP address routing prefix is sent from the IP router to the mobile host . Electronic cash is then forwarded from the mobile host to a control point within the access network . The control point confirms the authenticity and/or sufficiency of the electronic cash and, providing that confirmation is made, sends an authorization message to the IP router . The IP router blocks the transmission of IP packets between the mobile host and the Internet prior to receipt of the authorization message and permits the passage of IP packets only after an authorization message has been received.

Mobile internet access

The present invention relates to a method of recovering from a processor fault in a mobile communication network node provided with a plurality of processors. In use, connections are established between the network node and mobile stations for packet data communication between the network node and the mobile station. The connections are classified into priority order on basis of predefined classifying parameters. Working condition of at least one of the processors of the network node is monitored, and in case of detecting a processor fault, user plane connections are relocated within the network node from the faulted processor to another processor in accordance with the classified priority order of the connections. The invention relates further to a network node.

Recovery in mobile communication systems

A method of allocating an Internet Protocol (IP) address to a mobile wireless terminal within a mobile telecommunications network. During the establishment of the radio link between the terminal and the network, a negotiation is conducted to provide the mobile terminal with a host part for an IP address, where the host part is unique within the radio network. In the case of a UMTS network, the host part is the Radio Network Terminal Identity (RNTI).

IP address allocation for mobile terminals

A method of allocating an Internet Protocol (IP) address to a mobile wireless terminal within a mobile telecommunications network. The network repeatedly broadcasts, over a radio broadcast channel of the network, a routing prefix corresponding to the Radio Network Controller (RNC) ID. Mobile terminals listen to the broadcast channel, either when registering with the network or subsequently thereto, to determine the routing prefix. A mobile terminal combines the routing prefix with a host port to generate an IP address for subsequent Internet sessions.

A method of authenticating a mobile wireless terminal in a mobile telecommunications network, the terminal being a subscriber of an Internet Service Provider (ISP) rather than of a mobile network. The terminal is allocated an International Mobile Identity (IMI) which is transmitted from the terminal to a mobile network when the terminal wishes to register with the network. Mobile internet access system and method mapping mobile to internet service provider

In a mobile communications system that provides packet data services, a packet data connection is established between a mobile station and a radio access network. The state of the connection is used to specify one of plural different types of radio channels bearing the connection over the radio interface. The connection state preferably also may specify other parameters including, for example, one of plural different mobility management schemes tailored to the selected channel type or channel bit rate(s). The connection is dynamically adapted to an optimal state based on one or more conditions relating to the connection. For example, one or more traffic parameters are determined for the connection and may be used to predict a future value of that parameter. Based on the predicted parameter value or values, an optimal connection state is determined and implemented. If the predicted parameter value changes later in the connection, another connection state may be dynamically selected that is better suited in accordance with the newly predicted parameter value. One example embodiment is based on the amount of data in queue for a packet data connection. Comparison is made with one or more thresholds to decide which type of radio channel should bear the connection. Other factors, parameters, and conditions may be employed along with threshold comparisons to select the optimal radio channel type.
