A multi-service mobile station according to the invention comprises means () for connecting the device by radio to telecommunication network in order to utilize typical mobile station services, such as speech and data services. Additionally, the multi-service mobile station provides means () for using various information processing services (PP), such as telefax service and electronic mail service. When using information processing services, the information processed by the user is automatically saved in the memory means () of the multi-service mobile station when a certain criterium is met. The criteria are e.g. shifting from one service to another, going over to current saving mode, or, in a two-section multi-service terminal device, folding the device together. It is also characteristic of the multi-service mobile station according to the invention, that the automatic data storing and current saving methods operate in a close-knit cooperation with operating system, resulting in the longest possible battery operating time for the multi-service mobile station.

Multi-service mobile station

A method of arranging data protection in a telecommunication system including a first mobile communication network, a second mobile communication network, and a mobile station supporting both of the mobile communication networks is disclosed. The method includes ciphering traffic between the mobile station and the first mobile communication network using a first cipher key; calculating a second cipher key to be used for ciphering traffic between the mobile station and the second mobile communication network in the first mobile communication network when the mobile station operates in the first mobile communication network; transmitting information necessary for calculating the second cipher key from the first mobile communication network to the mobile station when the mobile station operates in the first mobile communication network; and calculating the second cipher key at the mobile station to be used for ciphering traffic between the mobile station and the second mobile communication network.

The method according to the invention can be used for conveying low-level SIM card commands from an external apparatus (12) of a mobile station (1) to a SIM card (2) connected to the mobile station. The invention is based on locking the SIM card (2) solely for a particular control element (10) for the duration of the exchange of low-level commands. The mobile station according to the invention advantageously includes two SIM card control elements (4, 10) the first of which (4) is intended for executing commands issued by internal blocks of the mobile station and the second of which (10) is intended for conveying low-level commands from an external apparatus (12) connected to the mobile station. Said first control element (4) receives high-level commands from the various blocks (6) of the mobile station and conveys to the SIM card (2) the corresponding low-level command sequences. Said second control element (10) reserves the SIM card (2) for itself, when necessary, whereafter the external apparatus (12) connected to the mobile station can issue low-level commands which are conveyed by said second control element (10) to the SIM card (2). Said second control element (10) frees the SIM card only when the external apparatus (12) indicates that the command sequence has ended. If said first control element (4) receives a command during the command sequence of the external apparatus, the first control element (4) remains waiting and executes the operations required by the command after the SIM card (2) has been released and is no more used by said second control element (10).

The scope of the present invention is an information transfer system and a mobile station (10) connected to it. In a system according to the invention a mobile station (10) is connected to a terminal device (40) e.g. through either a cable or an infrared connection, and the radio parts of the mobile station (10) are switched off. Through the terminal device (40), a local network, ATM-network (70, 81, 80, 82) and a network server (90) the mobile station (10) is connected over a wired network to a mobile communication switching center (100) or to a telephone network exchange (110, 130). A communication system for transmitting text messages to a mobile terminal in a radio telephone network is disclosed. A local mobile terminal is coupled to an external computer and is used to generate, manipulate and optionally store text messages which can be transmitted or received over the radio telephone network via the local mobile terminal.
