A compressing device includes a first turbine a second turbine and a compressor. The first turbine is configured to provide a first energy by expanding a first medium and the second turbine configured to provide a second energy by expanding a second medium. The compressor is configured to receive the first energy and the second energy during a first mode of the compressing device, receive the first energy during a second mode of the compressing device, and compress the second medium in accordance with the first mode or the second mode.

An air cycle machine is provided. The air cycle machine can be included an environmental control system of an aircraft. The air cycle machine can include a turbine comprising a plurality of inlet gas flow paths, a compressor driven by the turbine from a shaft, and a fan driven by the turbine from the shaft.

An environmental control system for an aircraft includes a higher pressure tap associated with a higher compression location in a main compressor section. A combined outlet receives airflow from a turbine outlet and a compressor outlet intermixing airflow and passing the mixed airflow downstream to be delivered to an aircraft system. A buffer air outlet communicates airflow to an engine buffer air system.

A system and method that comprises an air cycle machine, a flow of bleed air, at least one heat exchanger, and an inlet configured to supply the flow of the bleed air is provided. The bleed air flows from a source to mix with recirculated air in accordance with a high pressure mode or a recirculation chilling mode. The system and method also can also utilize the recirculated air flowing from the chamber to drive or maintain the air cycle machine in accordance with the above modes.

The turbine includes first and second inlets and provides energy by expanding one or more mediums. The first inlet is receives a first medium of the one or more mediums. The compressor receives a first energy derived from the first and second mediums being expanded across the turbine during a first mode of the compressing device, receives a second energy derived from the first medium being expanded across the turbine during a second mode of the compressing device, and compresses the second medium in accordance with the first mode or the second mode.

An airplane is provided. The airplane includes a compressing device. The compressing device includes a turbine with a first inlet and a second inlet. The turbine provides energy by expanding mediums. The first inlet is configured to receive a first medium of the mediums. The second inlet is configured to receive a second medium of the mediums. The compressing device includes a compressor and a motor. The compressor receives a first energy derived from the first and second mediums being expanded across the turbine during a first mode of the compressing device, receives a second energy derived from the first medium being expanded across the turbine during a second mode of the compressing device, and compresses the second medium in accordance with the first mode or the second mode. The motor provides a supplementary energy to the compressor.

An environmental control system for an aircraft includes a higher pressure tap to be associated with a higher compression location in a main compressor section associated with an aircraft engine, and a lower pressure tap to be associated with a lower pressure location in the main compressor section associated with the aircraft engine. The lower pressure location being at a lower pressure than said higher pressure location. The lower pressure tap communicates to a first passage leading to a downstream outlet, and having a second passage leading into a compressor section of a turbocompressor. The higher pressure tap leads into a turbine section of the turbocompressor such that air in the higher pressure tap drives the turbine section to in turn drive the compressor section of the turbocompressor. A turbine outlet receives airflow exhausted from the turbine section. A compressor outlet receives airflow exhausted from the compressor section. A combined outlet receives airflow from the turbine outlet and the compressor outlet intermixing airflow and passing the mixed airflow downstream to be delivered to an aircraft. A buffer air outlet communicates airflow to an engine buffer air system. The buffer air outlet receives airflow supplied to the turbocompressor. A gas turbine engine is also disclosed.

A compressing device added to a cabin air conditioning system to increase a pressure of air in the cabin air conditioning system itself and, thus, allow for lower pressure air to be bled from the engine. For instance, the compressing device allows air to be bled from a low, rather than a high, pressure locations of the engine.

Environmental control system including a compressing device

A system includes a first inlet providing a medium from a source and a compressing device arranged in communication with the first inlet. The compressing device includes a compressor configured to receive the medium and a turbine located downstream from the compressor. The system additionally includes at least one heat exchanger and an electric motor operably coupled to the compressor. The system is powered by mechanical power from the medium and by electrical power from the electric motor. The input power of the electric motor is less than or equal to 0.5 kilowatts per pounds per minute of medium compressed.

Environmental control system utilizing a motor assist and an enhanced compressor

An engine bleed air system having one or more taps in the compressor section of an aircraft engine, for example a low pressure tap and a high pressure tap. The low pressure tap is fluidly connected to the compressor of a turbo-compressor and the high pressure tap is fluidly connected to the turbine of the turbo-compressor. A bypass line connects the high pressure air to the outlet of the compressor, with a heat exchanger used to remove excess heat from the bypass line. An additional heat exchanger is used to remove any excess heat from the compressed air, dumping the heat to a fan stream or to the expanded air exiting the turbine. The system is controlled to minimize the amount of high pressure air extracted from the engine.

Engine bleed air system

An airplane is provided. The airplane includes a pressurized volume and an air conditioning system. The air conditioning system includes a compressor configured to receive a flow of a first medium, a turbine downstream of the compressor in a flow path of the first medium, a first valve that diverts the flow of the first medium around the turbine, a second valve that provides a second medium to the turbine, and a third valve downstream of the turbine that directs an outlet flow of the turbine towards the pressurized volume and that directs the outlet flow of the turbine away from the pressurized volume.

An airplane is provided. The airplane includes a first medium, a second medium, and an air conditioning. The air conditioning system includes a first turbine, a compressor, and a mixing point. The compressor is located upstream of the turbine in a flow path of the first medium. The mixing point is a location at which the first medium mixes with the second medium. The mixing point is downstream of the compressor and upstream of the turbine.
