A method of forming a compound lens includes molding multiple lens elements to form a compound lens. The multiple lens elements are molded from polymers that provide each lens element with the desired optical properties. First and second lens elements formed from a first polymer can be molded around a central, third element formed from a second polymer that differs from the first polymer by the addition of a cyclic substituent group. During curing of the lens elements, cross-links are formed between the first and second polymers to form an molded, integrally formed compound lens.

Triplet lens method of manufacture

An optical system providing improved control over light reflectivity is provided. The optical system includes an index-gap wedge prism to collect light escaping through the internal reflective surface of an optical element for recombination with light reflected by the internal reflective surface of the optical element. The index-gap wedge prism collects and redirects the escaped light back into the primary reflected path of the optical element to provide an aligned and correlated light across a range of applications, including applications where optical coatings on key surfaces may not be feasible.

A tractrix-based optical device is provided. The tractrix-based optical device includes a light receiving surface, a light emitting surface, and an intermediate portion of transparent material between the light receiving surface and the light emitting surface. The intermediate portion includes a boundary connective surface that adheres to a tractrix when in cross-section to provide total internal reflection of light propagating from the light receiving surface to the light emitting surface. The tractrix-based optical device can align and correlate light from multiple off-axis light emitting elements, or from an extended source light emitting element, thereby providing a generally uniform output distribution.

Tractrix-based optical device for use with illumination sources in optical systems

A compound lens and a related method of manufacture are provided. The compound lens includes a first lens element and a second lens element such that a light emitting surface of the first lens element is integrally joined to a light receiving surface of the second lens element, the first and second lens element being in optical alignment with each other. The first and second lens element are molded from optical grade silicone and can achieve complex illumination objectives not possible with single lens constructions. The method of manufacture includes injecting a silicone resin molding compound into a mold cavity having the desired shape of the compound lens. The method of manufacture can include over-molding a lens holding member onto the compound lens and adding electro-optically active particles to a surface of the compound lens or to the silicone resin forming the compound lens.

Compound lens for use with illumination sources in optical systems

An optical emitter providing improved light uniformity. The optical emitter includes a light source and a lens element spaced apart from the light source such that no additional lens elements are positioned therebetween. The lens element includes an inner light-receiving surface within the Fresnel field of the light source. In some embodiments, the light source includes an LED array and the lens element includes a lens array. The optical emitter provides the ability to adjust focus or spot size while not degrading the uniformity of the light intensity.

A reflector for reflecting light emitted by an LED light source and a method of forming the same are provided. The reflector has a unitary silicone body having a first end and a second end opposite the first end. The unitary silicone body has an inner surface extending between the first and second ends. The inner surface defines a first aperture at the first end for receiving the LED light source. The inner surface defines a second aperture at the second end for permitting light emitted from the LED light source to escape the unitary silicone body. The inner surface has a maximum inner diameter between the first and second ends. The inner surface has an inner diameter at the second end that is less than the maximum inner diameter.

An optical emitter enabling conversion of light from a light source. The optical emitter includes a first conic reflector defining an aperture for receiving the light source, a second conic reflector opposite the first conic reflector for collimating light emitted by the light source, and a volumetric light conversion element between at least a portion of the first reflector and at least a portion of the second reflector. The optical emitter can also include a convex mirror adjacent the vertex of the second conic reflector, and an elliptical element adjacent the first conic reflector. The light conversion element can include phosphor dispersed in a resin to convert light from a first wavelength to light of a second, longer, wavelength, wherein converted light is emitted from the light conversion element.

Optical modules and a method of precisely assembling the modules are provided. The method includes the step of providing a set of optical components including a plurality of beam shaping components for converting at least one initial shape in cross section of a laser beam to at least one desired shape in cross section and an optical mount for supporting the set of optical components. The method further includes holding and locating the optical mount relative to a reference axis. The method still further includes holding the optical components in position relative to the optical mount during the step of holding and locating wherein the positions of the beam shaping components are initial positions. The method includes directing a laser beam having the at least one initial shape at the set of optical components during the step of holding the optical components. The method further includes adjusting the initial positions of the beam shaping components to obtain final positions of the beam shaping components relative to the optical mount during the step of directing until the laser beam has the at least one desired shape.
